What social group were you part of in school?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-22 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Such as goth, jock, nerdy kid, etc?

The social scenes at high school weren't nearly that well-delineated or clearly marked. But I guess my group was kind of alt-leaning, hipster-y, druggy nerds. It was a continuum, you know? You had the nerdy nerds, then us who were alt nerds, then the nerdy alt kids, then the really cool hipsters.

I went to an urban all-girls Catholic high school In the early-mid 1990s, when alternative music was just breaking into the mainstream and most of the girls were still spraying their permed bangs 6" off their foreheads while listening to Bon Jovi (just to set the stage a little). I was in with the arty-alternative crowd, I guess. My best friend became my best friend after I looked at her face in profile and asked if I could draw her, and she wanted to be my friend after she looked at my binder and saw that all the bands' names I had scrawled on there were bands she liked, too. (I remember specifically PJ Harvey, Teenage Fanclub, and Shelleyan Orphan.)

It was a simpler time. *sniff*

I didn't really have a group, and I was always in the awkward position of being too brainy for most of my classmates, yet not brainy or aware enough for the really brainy kids. Some of my friends were in a similar boat (which makes sense, really), others were closer to the stereotypes.

At the end of the day, I was probably a combination of Neville and Luna from Harry Potter. That's probably the easiest way to explain it.

Outcast of the outcasts, it seems.

I never really had any friends. In most cases, I was just... there.

I was in a weird limbo where I was Too X for one group, but not X enough for the other, so I just wiggled into the "fringe" groups (Otaku/Artist/Misc.) and floated around there.

None. I kept to myself because I was scared of getting beat up.

Not sure. I guess I was a geek. I was in theater, the anime club, and the health club. I had zero fashion sense and dressed like a weeb/emo kid, but I got along well with everybody and nobody was ever mean to me. Everyone at my school belonged to multiple clubs and it was hard to pigeonhole them.

The "troubled loser troublemaker" group, I guess. I was really into the goth scene but that mostly translated into whatever black clothing I found at the thrift store, dollar store safety pins and guyliner, and a rotating arsenal of trenchcoats.

I had a pretty eclectic mix of friends, though. Lots of stoners, most of the goths, a couple of dirty hippy punk kids, a couple of straight-A student types, a couple of gang bangers, some gamer geeks...

Umm, kind of a nerdy art group I think? Mostly revolved around art and animation with a couple of real smart nerdy types.

I think we were basically the semi-nerdy/geeky, uncool-but-not-overwhelmingly-uncool group. Our "uncool" image definitely wasn't helped by the fact that we were an all-girls group until eleventh grade, and most of us either lacked the confidence to acquire romantic partners, or weren't interested in dating at all.

I don't think any of my schools had clear cut social groups like that.

Blue Hills (small church school, K-10, about 25 or so people in my class, and that was made up of two grades, with my grade having between 3-7 students) was too small and it was more like everyone broke up into groups of two or three friends. Of the people I hung around with, they tended to be the geek/nerd types.

Richmond River (big state school, around 1000 students, around 100 in my grade) had social groups but I don't think they were defined by a "type", but were simply groups of friends who claimed a set of seats during break times. I spent some time hanging around a group of generally nice people, but after part of their group decided to freeze me out, I became a loner who would spend as much time in the library as I could.
