Dude, I'm an atheist, but even I can appreciate the sentiment there. God may mean zilch to me, but if he means something to them, it's nice to think they'd implore him on my behalf.

AYRT

I probably hate it due to the type of people this sentiment always came from; they didn't actually give a single whiskey-flavored shit about what was happening to me, but wanted to look like they did. Offering to pray made them feel like they were doing good with the least amount of effort.

I realize not everybody means it that way, but since that was always what it meant to me before I left that nuclear rathole of a church community, that's the type of person I always associate it with. Someone who wants to look helpful but doesn't care enough to be helpful (or honest if they know they can't really help).

In a lot of online groups we had a rule that you should specify if you want "Good juju" AKA thoughts and prayers, and/or "sympathy" and/or "advice" and anyone who gave the wrong one in the situation was an asshole. It made things a lot easier on everyone. It's nice that you appreciate getting thoughts and prayers during tough times, but that doesn't mean other people don't hate it. You are not the moral compass of the universe, you know.

I wasn't making a moral judgment. Other people can hate it all they like. JFC.

O RLY. Because that sounds an awful lot like a passive-aggressive version of "you're being ridiculous."
