You can be white and love Patty. Patty is amazing. She was often the funniest part of the movie AND her municipal history obsession was awesome. Plus, she and Leslie Jones both have caught no end of vile shit from racists (putting aside what you thought of the movie, the treatment of Leslie Jones has been appalling). So...Viva la Patty!

........how are you getting that at all

I get the 'not for white people' thing with some characters but...not with Patty.
go ahead

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah white people and black people should be separate in fandom, equal of course, but separate. Separate but equal, that cannot go wrong at all.

Either 1) those parts of tumblr are overreacting, 2) you've misunderstood what they're saying, or 3) you're jumping to conclusions here. It's fine that you identify with Patty! It's great! You can relate to her, and celebrate that, without being "problematic." What IS a problem is when white people who relate to non-white characters ignore the importance of those characters to non-white viewers, and speak over people trying to celebrate that aspect of the character.

tl;dr: no character is "only for" one specific group of people, but lots of characters have special importance to certain groups and it's good to acknowledge that if you're not in the group

Okay, this worded what I was trying to stutter out better.

When people go "Wow, Patty is great I DON'T SEE COLOR SHE'S JUST GREAT :)))" like fauxgressives do - that ignores the fact that there are plenty of black people out there going "Hey, she's nerdy and she looks like me and that's great!"

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There is nothing wrong with not seeing color, an increasing number of people and some people have always not cared about color, the problem is forgetting that the majority of people still do. It is not enough to drop your own prejudices, you have to be careful you don't accidentally wander into the line of fire of someone elses prejudice with your writing.

What do you mean "ignore" it? What do we need to do in order to be able to say we relate to the characters without ignoring it? Do we have to say "I'm white and I know there are lots of ways I can't relate to her as much as a black person can" when we talk about how we do relate? Do we need to discuss those ways? That all sounds like it would get tiring. Much like how you shouldn't have to talk about "why you know something you like is problematic (because reason1 reason2 reason3) but you like it anyway" whenever you talk about liking it.

I loved her!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rather be guilty of the "appropriation" of appreciating a black character than the "misogynoir" of thinking that because she's black she's not for me.

Also, white people need black heroes. It's important.

Patty's is awesome OP, like her and Holtzman were my faves.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone saying that is a troll. You can drop the martyr act.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I think Poe's Law has been thoroughly blurred in the last couple years. Because I don't know where you hang, but there are people out there who sincerely believe that kind of stuff and are 100% serious about it. (Take for example, the Steven Universe fandom. I know that's basically beating a dead horse at this point, but if you want a modern day classic example of the "It's not for you, it's for X/YZ" mentality in dead seriousness, that's it)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-24 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That's cute. You can't throw a rock in Tumblr without hitting some black militant social justice nutjob saying stuff exactly like that.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
There's an op-ed article that explains to straight women that Holtzmann is a lesbian and "not for you." Those words exactly. I think it's even the title of the piece. It's a given that white women are hearing the same message about Patty.

Characters aren't "only for" anyone. Imo a mark of a well-written character is that people who have very little in common with the character in many ways can still empathize with them.

wasn't melissa mccarthy originally supposed to play patty? if that's true it kinda puts a hole in their declaration.

I haven't seen Ghostbusters yet but from what I've seen of Leslie Jones, she seems like a very lovely, friendly person and I've gotten the vibe that everyone loves her

A couple of certain people does not a fandom trend make. Patty is awesome, go forth and reblog gifsets about her or write meta or draw fanart. We need more Patty everywhere.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-25 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm Pasty McWhiteypants over here and I fucking love Patty because, honestly, if I were surrounded by science nerds who blew up ghosts I would totally be trying to figure out what historical period the ghosts were from before they went kablooey and kind of "smile and nod"ing when the scientific jargon got too obscure. And I don't agree with the whole "Patty's not for white people/Holtzman's not for straight people" thing, but I can at least kind of see why some black people are overprotective/possessive of Patty because holy shit the vitriol aimed at Leslie Jones is disgusting.
