Drop crotch pants, which are an even uglier version of MC Hammer pants.

Jeans so skinny you can practically see a guy's dick through them.

"Normal", non-rich people who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a designer purse or shoes.

I don't really get designer purses in general. It is a bag. For carrying your stuff. And it isn't like the designer ones look that much better than the cheaper ones.

Actually, I'll say designer things in general where you are paying a ton of money to advertise for them. I don't want visible designer labels on my clothes. I'm not paying you so I can advertise for you, thank you very much.

I just think it's weird when you get to the point where your purse is the most valuable thing you carry... not your wallet or its contents, the purse itself. WTF man. I'm with you on the obnoxious designer labels, too.

To stick up for designer purses, it's the quality aspect for me rather than the label. Purses that I get for $20 tend to fall apart after a few years (like, one LITERALLY fell apart while I was on the metro). Purses carry a lot of important shit for me, and I'd prefer to buy something that I like that I know will last for a decade or more. A designer purse is going to have the staying power that a cheap one doesn't.

idk man, I can buy a cute $10 purse every year for a decade for a fraction of what some of these designer bags cost

I paid $50 for my purse and that already feels extravagant. It's lasted me for 8 years so far. I get buying a purse that's well made, but just because something is a designer purse doesn't mean it's well made. Also I've seen knock off designer purses sell for cheap in Asia, made at the same factories. So again, it's not cheap purses that are the problem, it's poorly made ones.

I love cute purses, but I think most designer purses are ugly, at least the ones with the logos all over them. The entire point of buying and wearing them is to show people how rich you are. Knockoffs make even less sense.

+1

It's all about status, which is kind of ridiculous. But *shrugs* different people value different things, and if having a bag that says COACH on it makes someone feel good....

I don't get it either, but. It is what it is, I suppose.

I agree with you about the status thing - something came up on a video I watched once - I think it was in a series about fashion through the ages - that noted that the big name designers got to a point where most people could not afford to buy their clothing, so they branched into selling things like handbags and shoes so they could sell something to the general public that couldn't afford couture fashion.

So an average person can't buy Chanel clothing, but can feel a bit fancy if they can walk around with a Chanel handbag.

I'm pretty poor and generally buy my clothes from thrift shops, but the exceptions are underwear, bras, socks, and shoes. Undies and socks I buy cheap cotton multipacks, bras I buy new off ebay (I can get bras that actually fit for less than $100 that way), and shoes I mostly buy new from Nordstrom Rack. I walk everywhere and it's never been worth it for me to buy cheap shoes because they break me before I break them in and they wear out super fast too. I've literally walked the soles off shoes before. But I also own a couple pairs of nice shoes that retail for $500+. I think the most I ever paid was a bit under $200. And they'll still be wearable when I'm an old lady. I paid $20 to repair one pair once and get them polished and I've had them 10 years. And I've never gotten a blister or sore from any of my expensive shoes. Considering I once dyed the heels of some beige canvas sneakers brown with my blood while breaking them in, I figure good shoes can be worth the money.

Yep. But you don't have to pay hundreds of dollars for good shoes.

"Normal", non-rich people who spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a designer purse or shoes.

In my experience, it's about...like...showing your fashion game is strong? Like, for people who are really into fashion and follow a lot of fashion bloggers and enjoy pursuing fashion as a hobby. Admittedly, brands are pretty irrelevant when it comes to what looks good, but for people who really pursue fashion, part of that is about playing the game a little (or a lot). Which means incorporating a few brand-conscious pieces into your wardrobe. And since a purse is usually a woman's most ever-present item, it makes sense to choose that as the item you want other fashion conscious people to recognize for what it is.

You also see this a lot with footwear, such as Timberland boots ($160 USD), Birkenstocks ($135 USD), and Hunter rain boots ($165 USD) - all of which are immediately recognizable. There are a lot of other versions of those basic types of footwear, but if you have those brands specifically it's...for fashion conscious people it's like, you're not just following that trend, you're owning it.

It's all a bit silly, sure, but as long as it's something a person enjoys and does for fun (and they aren't going into debt in the pursuit of their hobby) then I don't think there's any reason to judge. When it starts to get kind of sad and weird is when people feel like they have to be fashionable and, like, keep up with other fashionable people, and if they don't it's embarrassing.
