I don't really get designer purses in general. It is a bag. For carrying your stuff. And it isn't like the designer ones look that much better than the cheaper ones.

Actually, I'll say designer things in general where you are paying a ton of money to advertise for them. I don't want visible designer labels on my clothes. I'm not paying you so I can advertise for you, thank you very much.

I just think it's weird when you get to the point where your purse is the most valuable thing you carry... not your wallet or its contents, the purse itself. WTF man. I'm with you on the obnoxious designer labels, too.

To stick up for designer purses, it's the quality aspect for me rather than the label. Purses that I get for $20 tend to fall apart after a few years (like, one LITERALLY fell apart while I was on the metro). Purses carry a lot of important shit for me, and I'd prefer to buy something that I like that I know will last for a decade or more. A designer purse is going to have the staying power that a cheap one doesn't.

I paid $50 for my purse and that already feels extravagant. It's lasted me for 8 years so far. I get buying a purse that's well made, but just because something is a designer purse doesn't mean it's well made. Also I've seen knock off designer purses sell for cheap in Asia, made at the same factories. So again, it's not cheap purses that are the problem, it's poorly made ones.

I love cute purses, but I think most designer purses are ugly, at least the ones with the logos all over them. The entire point of buying and wearing them is to show people how rich you are. Knockoffs make even less sense.

It's all about status, which is kind of ridiculous. But *shrugs* different people value different things, and if having a bag that says COACH on it makes someone feel good....

I don't get it either, but. It is what it is, I suppose.

I agree with you about the status thing - something came up on a video I watched once - I think it was in a series about fashion through the ages - that noted that the big name designers got to a point where most people could not afford to buy their clothing, so they branched into selling things like handbags and shoes so they could sell something to the general public that couldn't afford couture fashion.

So an average person can't buy Chanel clothing, but can feel a bit fancy if they can walk around with a Chanel handbag.
