James?

I still maintain they were both assholes who got screwed by a bigger asshole called Albus Dumbledore. He may have used the carrot more than the stick on James and the stick a lot more harshly on Snape, but they were still both assholes whom he used and abused.

Naturally this means I get screamed at by both sides, and the Albus Party Posse too.

I gotta agree. Dumbledore was just not a nice person (and i don't really think he thought things through all that well, either).

OP

It's more of a general post on base breaker characters and the conversation around them as a whole - it's an issue I've seen with a lot of characters in a lot of fandoms.

Yes, this is a massive pain.

I feel like some fandoms are good for this (like GOT), but I honestly feel that the more a fandom is about shipping and the less it is about meta, the worse this phenomenon is.

I agree actually

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Shipping is the cancer of fandom. If it can be contained and excised then sometimes you can have a decent fandom, if not then a fandom is nearly always doomed.

I find it is worst when the fandom involves adult/children interactions, and the adult is harsh with the children. Then you get a total shitstorm from the angry tweens and teens who (simply by virtue of being tweens and teens) have no sense of nuance or understanding of anything beyond the tween-teen world.

Dio Brando?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like US politics with Hillary and Donald right now. Even the text is red and blue. Must be a coincidence.

I'm gonna be real with you. I love saying "Jason Todd did nothing wrong. Ever. In his life."

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
He refused to dye his hair black.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Loki?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that too.
As well as Kylo Ren.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
That was my thought, as well as Tony Stark and Kylo Ren.

My first thought was Ulfric Stormcloak, but this applies to so many characters.

Any MTMTE fans here...? I feel like this describes MTMTE fans to a T. For a series that explores the nuances of people's motivations and the greys between the black and white, I feel like the readers just don't grasp that concept at all.

Agreed, especially with Megatron. The revolutionary who became a worse tyrant than any he fought against and was given the chance to then fight for what was right again but without being allowed to be a tyrant and liked himself better for that. It is a braver story arc than anything the big two put out.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Lapis Lazuli. She's either a poor abused woobie who has never done anything wrong in her life and if she did it wasn't her fault, or she's an evil abusive monster.

Jasper, same thing.

Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's something you see pretty often in fandom and out. I think that heated arguments sometimes drive people to extreme positions when most of the time, most people don't necessarily hold them. It can be really hard to hold nuanced discussions when insults and accusations start flying. There's also the perception that you're not a "real" fan if you're too temperate in your opinions.

Gabriel Reyes/Reaper, Hanzo, Symmetra...
