Trump/Fart

(Anonymous) 2016-10-13 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently "trump" can be slang for fart in the UK. Now I really, really, hate that it isn't in the US. That would be so helpful.

Honetly the only thing that would be helpful for the USA if both candidates somehow had to drop out of the race and you got to start from scratch.

You like American opinions on Belgian politics?

I'm sure you meant this as some sort of 'do unto others' thing, but I imagine it would be pretty interesting to hear American opinions on Belgian politics. I certainly enjoy seeing people react to Russian news, personally.

Re: Trump/Fart

(Anonymous) 2016-10-13 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a knee-jerk reaction (sorry Kallanda). I don't think it's 'do unto others' so much as there should be a certain level of circumspection.

Nayrt

Our opinions on Belgian politics mostly consist of blank stares.

You can give your opinions all you like. Belgian politics are shit. The difference is that whoever is in the presidential seat in the USA has far more impact on global politics than Belgium ever could have, so yeah, the rest of the world is going to have an opinion - because whoever is in that seat could potential hurl us into a global military conflict.

Re: OP

It was justified. As you said, American politics affect far more than just America. That's true of many countries, but America more than most.

Re: Trump/Fart

Not really. We like to say "oh there's so many people how did you end up with the worst ones", but Hillary needed the DNC's cooperation to override the primary. And Trump? He's just saying Republican policy out loud. There's nobody to replace either of them except the crooks who put them where they are to begin with.

Re: Trump/Fart

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Hillary won the Democratic primary by 3.7 million votes. How many of those do you think the DNC got her?

Re: Trump/Fart

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Only when you don't count all the inconvenient ballots they threw away.

I do think the DNC was screwing around but I don't think it was solely responsible for her winning.

Re: Trump/Fart

[personal profile] soldatsasha 2016-10-14 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was under the impression that most people (including Hillary supporters and many political insiders) thought the DNC had fucked around with the nomination? Especially since Bernie had remained such a popular candidate up to the end, in spite of most left-leaning media doing their best to push him out of the race.

No...she did not "override" the primary. It never was close, and it never was going to be.

And Trump is doing no such thing. He's not really a Republican; he's something different and worse. Many, many high-profile Republicans have repudiated him. Even Paul Ryan is sick of him.

Re: Trump/Fart

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well... Kind of. Paul Ryan hasn't exactly condemned him.

More significantly: Trump isn't exactly a Republican, but his supporters were mostly Republicans, and Republican politicians have been more than happy for forty years to pander to those impulses and to entertain those policies and to signal to those voters that they were in full agreement with them. Trumpism never emerged fully formed until now but it's been in the air for a long time and most Republican politicians have had no qualms at all with using it for electoral advantage.

Shit, didn't see GWB complaining when he won the Carolina primary after his advisers spread a rumor that McCain had fathered a black child, you know? Just because it's never been mainstream doesn't mean it didn't exist.

I am American and I largely agree with this comment.

I can almost vote for Clinton, but I have bad memories of the way she and her husband were hounded in the 1990's, and I think she's had too much damage to her reputation to effectively lead her party. I think I may vote for "neither." That seems best.

Re: Trump/Fart

(Anonymous) 2016-10-14 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think the Republican Party is going to reject the legitimacy of any Democratic president, so I'm not sure how much any damage to Clinton's reputation really matters.

Best for your moral superiority, or best for the country? Honest question.

Re: Trump/Fart

Please vote for Clinton. Voting for neither helps Trump, and you'd be seriously kidding yourself if you believe she would be just as bad as him in office.

she's had too much damage to her reputation to effectively lead her party.

That's not really true like, at all. Most of her party supports and stands behind her (which cannot be said for Trump). Regardless of whether you'd agree with her policies or like her as a person, she has a great deal of experience and knows how to lead. This particular thing would not be an issue. She also wouldn't create World War III or plunge us farther into a culture of regressive bigotry and violence, so there's that too.

Puhlease! Get off your lazy ass and vote for Trump directly, instead of silently supporting him by not voting, or get over yourself and vote for Clinton. If you're looking for the moral high ground, you can find it inside a voting booth.

Didn't take long for even a thread like this to turn to conspiracy theories.
