That's very self-righteous of you! "Never assume..." They could just not say they will do something, how about that?

Re: I've said it before, and I'll say it again

I can't believe I have to keep repeating this:

"I'd totally buy it" doesn't necessarily mean "can but won't," it could very well be "would but can't." As in, would genuinely love to do so, and would like to offer my support by mentioning as such, but cannot in reality make it happen.

what even are you doing. you know very well in that context it means "if you did that I would". Why would anyone mention how they would buy someone's book if they had the money if said book hasn't even been written? you're making this about yourself for no reason

thank you. the trolls are out today, i guess. "oh wait it's just a difference of opinion....."

Re: I've said it before, and I'll say it again

Yep. Someone thinks that by being the Semantics Police makes their argument correct. Sadly for them, it does not.

Re: I've said it before, and I'll say it again

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe they just said something with the best of intentions because they wanted to support their friend, then months or years passed and they had moved on/were poor/not interested in the concept any more/too busy with real life. How about that? I know, shocking; people are not perfect.

Of course things happen. But I really have trouble believing people don't think the OP has any reason to feel hurt, or that they "didn't really mean it."

I thnk people are just trolling at this point

Re: I've said it before, and I'll say it again

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course the OP can feel hurt. Honestly, I get that. It's valid. They put a lot of work into something. It's awful to feel that's not appreciated.

But blaming it on their friends as some kind of betrayal is ridiculous. It sucks but it's no-one's responsibility to promote their work but the author's.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-30 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"I would buy it" =/= "I will buy it."

It is. "I would buy it if you published it" is not some vague encouragement. It's saying they'll do something. Fine, they flaked out, didn't follow thru, but you're just playing devil's advocate. Whatever, I'm out, troller

DA

Serious advice here: you might want to take a step back from this one, you seem to be taking this all way too seriously for someone that's not even involved.

I'm just fed up with people piling on the OP here. I can totally see where they're coming from. I think some people are being very understading, and some people are getting a kick out of playing devil's advocate, jumping on OP, and splitting hair. It's shitty. If people in this comm want real secrets that come from a vulnerable place, then they should shut the fuck up if they have nothing but hateful things to say. Some of the commentors are behaving like that. Well, do you guys want the comm to turn into endless shit posting about vomitting celebs? Really?

Re: I've said it before, and I'll say it again

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
...I think it's a bit much to label a spirited discussion on genuine differing opinions on a worthy topic 'hateful things [that will turn the comm] into endless shitposting about vomiting celebs". I mean... really?????

really...

How is it a difference of opinion to act like the OP is stupid for feeling this way??

OP

SA that has had a lot of responses to you

I don't think the anon above me is the actual OP fwiw

I also don't think ANYONE has said OP is stupid for feeling this way. They aren't. It hurts. But they need to not lay that hurt on friends who probably have no idea they have even 'betrayed' them or 'reneged on a promise'. There's a lot of heightened feelings flying around here.

I bet OP of secret #5 feel stupid right now.

(Hey, OP #5. I like your secret.)

The fact that everyone who disagrees with you is a troll is alarming, honestly. The world will not coddle you.

"I would eat that" doesn't mean anything more than an idle, vague interest, and doesn't mean you will eat it if it was given to you. It's interest, but not an obligation. That you think it is means I would never be friends with you because you'd take even the vaguest statement of interest as a fucking obligation to you.

I'm not playing Devil's Advocate, this is legit what I believe. Because I live in the real world and not in Tumblr's Cuddlesphere.

Except I'm not, but whatever helps you sleep at night with people now saying what you want to hear.

[personal profile] crossy_woad 2016-10-31 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
i think i responded to pretty much everybody?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
This x1000. Maybe what OP wrote is something that didn't interest their friends at all. Would they rather their friends lied and pretended to be interested in something they didn't actually care about? Personally, I would much rather my friends be honest about not having an interest in something than fake it, because faking it would mean that they didn't feel comfortable enough to be honest with me, and I don't want that.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Really, how hard is it to communicate?

Pretending nothing happened and hoping you forgot is not honesty. Silence is not honesty! There are ways to be honest while being tactful and if that's too much effort then you're not much of a good friend!

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
If a considerable amount of time has passed since the time OP's friends said they'd buy it and when OP actually published the book, there's a good chance the friends don't even remember that they said that in the first place. I mean, just among my own friend group, we say stuff like "oh we should totally do X" all the time and then it gets completely forgotten in a couple of weeks because it was just a passing idea rather than something we were serious about committing to.
