It's going to be more popular than the original.

Not OP

I think it will make more money. Lasting popularity, I'm not so sure about. Lots of high profile movies with big stars make giant box office opening days... before everyone realizes it sucks.

nayrt - Yeah. I'd be surprised if it proved to be as popular as the original franchise in the long run, despite Tom Cruise's star power.

AYRT

What made the old franchise so great was its ability to make fun of itself. It knew what it was, between action scenes. I just can't see Tom Cruise carrying that kind of series. The guy is like chronically crazy-eyed serious. The only comedic roles I've ever thought he was good in was when he was playing a character that is supposed to be chronically crazy-eyed serious.

Sadly I wouldn't be surprised.

Well, the original is around 80 years old, so....

I am somewhat underwhelmed that no one else seemed to recall that fact.

Yeah...aside from you and the one nonny downthread who specifically mentioned Universal, this thread is vaguely depressing to me.

(I only saw the original around the time the 1999 remake was released, but I have a strong soft spot for it.)

I have never seen it myself, but I do know it exists, so my first thought on seeing someone say "the original" was "Do you mean the black and white one?".
