I don't think the art form is worthless or anything, but probably the reason most heroines despise it (or the reason I never enjoyed it very much) was that they were forced to do it INSTEAD of the things they wanted to do, like learning how to sword-fight and ride and joust. If you are forced to do something instead of something you yearn to do, then that something becomes hated, no matter how lovely it is. And if it's representational of sexism, it becomes a symbol of oppression in a way.

I like Scott, but I totally understand the sentiment. It's really cathartic reading a fic where a character you hate has exaggerated bad qualities.
