Re: What are you a judgy bitch over?

The term queer in this context: "a heartfelt story about a young queer woman coming into her own and finding her place in the world."

Probably because lesbian would work way better in this context (girl meets girl in nightclub, they have sex, and it's about the relationship the ensues with zero focus on dudes sexually) and queer's still got slur connotations that feel weird to use in a straightforward and dry description .

"Lesbian" and "queer" are not interchangeable.

That's not what the person is saying. If a story is a romance between two girls and neither of them show interest in men, I think you can just say the story is a lesbian one. In terms of narrative, a character's identity is only what has been shown to us. If a woman only shows interest in other women, she's a lesbian. If a woman show interest in men and women, she's bi.

You can have "headcanons" all you want, but, at the end of the day, all that matters is what has been shown in the story.

I like queer when it refers to gay/bi/lesbian sexual orientation. Personally, I use it, because I'd describe my sexuality as "mostly lesbian but occasionally attracted to guys", which is technically bisexual, I guess, but that doesn't really reflect my dating experience (overwhelmingly female). Queer feels more like "not-straight", which is easier. I think it sounds nice... and I say this as someone who has been called a "fucking queer" before.

I hate when non-LGB people use queer though. You aren't queer if you are asexual, "demisexual", nonbinary, whatever. If you don't fuck same-sex people, don't call yourself queer. But the word's been appropriated by the tumblr crowds, so that's the only reason the word sometimes rankles me.
