I feel similarly, anon. Wasn't that basically the reason the holodeck was invented in the first place? :D

Maybe they're all outraging so much because they spend their free time holodecking orgies about each other.

This. "Must pretend to be outraged so they don't realize that I do this as well!"

I suppose there's a difference between knowing something might happen and then actually seeing yourself as the Goddess of Empathy. But yes, I appreciated that DS9 had a much more realistic view of what people would be using the Holodeck for.

Yeah, I think there's a bit of boundary issues involved in doing RPF of your co-workers on the ship's computer as opposed to the privacy of your own mind.

Although my favorite holodeck episode was on Voyager, where the crew were so bored they ended up latching on to Tuvok's RPF scenario.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Tuvok's simulation was pretty badass, actually. Also, Tom's satire of the Doctor's holonovel was pretty awesome! "Chapther 1: It's the Doctor's world, you're just living in it!" Plus, Janeway as Arachnia!

(Anonymous) 2016-12-01 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I can understand the outrage of the fellow crew members. I think Barclay definitely crossed a line and I found myself embarrassed by his actions.

Even if one uses the holodeck to play out fantasies, I don't know if I'd ever go so far to use it for co workers. It's one thing to think it and another to make it semi real. I'm a socially awkward introvert myself but I have trouble imagining a scenario where I'd do it.

Like keep in mind, the holodeck isn't exactly private either, it's really easy for others on the crew to access what you've been doing or even to interrupt you in the middle of whatever you are doing. I would think that would keep people from going too far with it.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-01 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
At least on DS9 they lock the door, on the Enterprise the holodeck is open all access.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Geordi gets chewed out for a similar program too, doesn't he? Like it was a visiting engineer he gets a crush on, and he makes a holodeck conversational program with her appearance so he could practice talking to her, but of course she finds out about it. Iirc it's not full-blown fantasy -- she appears in uniform and isn't salacious, but she does speak and use body language more informally and openly than in any actual encounter Geordi's had with the actual person.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Geordi gets chewed out because he tried to take it to the next level using the holodeck character to practice his moves to use on the real version.

You want DS9 where some guy pays Quark big bucks to try and make a holodeck slutty sex slave version of Kira and she freaks out big time and everyone is on her side and thinks Quark is a total sleaze for trying it. Then they hack his program and put Quarks head on slutty sex slave Kira's body and a thousand Quark/Odo slashfics were born.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well yeah, Geordi starts off with good intentions because he needs to the holodeck help, but then he asks for the holodeck to give her "personality" and ends up falling in love with the program before even meeting the real woman.

Then the real woman comes around and it's, well awkward.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't she also turn out to be less warm and nice than the holodeck version?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah basically. She had a definite professional distance and Geordi was trying to treat her like an old friend, and that added to the awkward.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
And 100% more married too.

I don't think that's a fair way to put it. She was a professional woman and Geordi was being sleazy because he'd built up this fantasy in his head. Of course she wanted to keep him at a distance, the whole thing must have been incredibly creepy from her perspective (I'd love to have heard her com calls home...)

(Anonymous) 2016-12-01 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
RPF is inherently creepy even when it was a stranger. If I found someone was leaving their workstation unlocked and it had creepy spankfic of me on the screen, I'd be creeped out and angry too.

Just because people probably do it does not invalidate my right to be creeped out by it.

Nooooo. There's light-years of difference between having fantasies of random celebrities and having fantasies about people you're supposed to have a professional relationship with. And that's before you get into literally acting those fantasies out with mindless doppelgängers. His crew mates had every reason to be completely skeeved out.

To me there's a difference between thinking about something in your head and acting it out with a programmable puppet that looks exactly like someone you know, and the latter is definitely creepy to me.

I do wonder though if that would make unrequited crushes worse?

I think you're way overestimating.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I do think there would be a fair amount sex fantasy holoprograms, but not anywhere near 99%. Probably even a few with coworkers, though I would think not that many people would be that shameless and I would expect those programs to be locked down pretty tight with as many security protocols as someone could think of. I think the celebrities or the random imaginary ideal person/people would be much more likely.

If I had a holodeck, I would be a Jedi, or a character in one of my favorite books or shows, or, hell, Captain Kirk. I would be a fictional pirate or a vampire or a faerie. I would go to past historical events. I would have a place as I remember it from childhood. I would be a knight of the round table or a resistance fighter or a magic-wielder. I would go to places that no longer existed.

Re: I think you're way overestimating.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I would definitely do all of those things if I had a holodeck, but I would also bang super hot guys who fulfil all my sexual fantasies while I was at it. No reason Jedi!me or knight!me or pirate!me can't get laid.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
DS9 makes it clear that it's illegal to make a hologram of a living person without their permission, so there's one reason. Also, it's like writing fic about your co-workers, just creepy. At least mask it a little bit!

I liked DS9's view: some people use holodecks for sex, some people use them for sports that you can't otherwise do (like kayaking) and some people just like dressing up.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-02 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Less like having fantasies that stay in your head, and more like taking pictures of your coworkers and photoshopping them into your pictures. And then keeping those on your work computer. Little bit creepy.
