Things that bug you both in fiction and in real life

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-12-08 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Are there things that bother you both in a fictional setting and in real life?

Any time someone tells someone bookish or nerdy or whatnot that they don't know how to have fun, it really bothers me. It shows up a lot in media, in fanfics, and in real life. And no, they do know how to have fun, they just have a different idea than you of what fun is. Maybe for them reading is fun.

YES THANK YOU. You know what I *don't* find fun? Loud parties with drinking. It doesn't mean I don't know how to have fun, it means different people like different things, yeesh.

Just once, imagine if idk, the nerdy girl dragged the popular girl home and they both put on fluffy pajamas and sat next to each other on the sofa with hot chocolate and read books, and then the popular girl was like "wow this is so great and relaxing I love it".

GOD YES, THIS! Just because we don't like their definition of fun doesn't mean we don't have fun! Some of us are introverts, goddammit!

Medical/technological/scientific inaccuracy.

Like, okay, I know I should cut non-scientists some slack but I just... I just fucking can't. I'm sorry. It throws me right out of it every time and all I can think is "WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST GOOGLE IT."

Your ultracool badass CDC epidemiologist is walking around without protective gear in an area that might be contaminated! They just fucking touched their hands when they removed their gloves! They TOUCHED A DOOR HANDLE BARE HANDED AAAAAAHHHHHH

Re: Things that bug you both in fiction and in real life

(Anonymous) 2016-12-08 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, you shouldn't need gloves to touch the door handle. You're supposed to be taking your gloves off when you're done sciencing and washing your hands before you leave the lab. Take pity on the people who have to wash your floors and take out your trash -- they use the doorknobs too!

Problems that are easily solved by clear communication.

YES. This is the worst. I hate plots based on misunderstandings, especially if it involves a character overhearing a sentence fragment taken entirely out of context. They are just so fucking stupid.

This to the nth degree. Stupid misunderstandings and baseless assumptions are the bane of my reading/viewing/general existence. JUST FUCKING TALK, PEOPLE.

It's a big reason why I find season-long romance arcs to be annoying.

There is only one reason when I give this one a pass...

(Anonymous) 2016-12-08 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Stories where a character is ashamed about something and struggles to keep it secret until the secret finally gets out and they find out it wasn't a big deal to the other person after all. I'm not talking about murder or whatever, but maybe somebody avoids sex because they have erectile dysfunction that healing sex won't fix.

Sometimes the payoff is the secretive character realizing their love interest is okay with them exactly as they are. Then they can redefine sex using their mouth, fingers and sex toys instead of their dick.

Whenever erotic fiction about an artist has someone having sex with paint on their hands. Like. Noooooooooooooooo.

Also acting like figure drawing classes are sexy/its appropriate to try and hit on the nude model.

Re: Things that bug you both in fiction and in real life

(Anonymous) 2016-12-08 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Figure drawing class is one of the least sexy things you could do. It's hard to feel sexy when you're frustrated that you can't get the lines on the left foot to look correct.

I wish there was more not sexualized nudity in media though because sometimes trying to explain to people that nudity is not a big deal and you need it to study anatomy makes for an interesting discussion.

i haven't come across the first one but i know i agree already. lots of paints are toxic. it just sounds like you're asking for a bad time.

Days with nude models were when my classes were at their most professional. Respect the models, they're already putting themselves in a vulnerable position.

Relationships where they argue all the time or are even downright abusive. It bothers me in reality for obvious reasons.

In fiction I just don't want it romanticized or end up being endgame. I am fine with fucked up ships but it needs to be acknowledged that it's fucked up.

I hate it both in fiction and real life when people act like their romantic partners are terrible and relationships are consistently unpleasant, or they always bitch about their partners, but that's just the way partners/relationships alwas are, lol amirite?

No...

Adultery as something you root for.

Unhealthy relationships presented as healthy, and you're evidently expected to accept them as something to aspire to.

People/characters who never learn from their mistakes and just keep on making them, one after the other, and we're supposed to be totally supportive of them and/or think they're adorable or relatable. "Ha ha, doesn't EVERYBODY do this?? So true!!!" Uh...no?

Talking cats.

OTT possessiveness and jealousy being considered signs of true love.

Cheating as something to root for.

Stupid misunderstandings that could be solved in under a minute if people would talk to each other like adults.

Sort of related to the abuse-is-love people have talked about, affection/attention as a way to appease bad behavior.

Read a ficlet recently that was basically

Her: Ugh, this guy has been just awful to me recently, we fight all the time and he's just so short tempered and cranky.
Friend: Have you been putting out enough?
Her: Oh! I guess not. I'll go take care of that, thanks!

I knew a guy who was... maybe not the best character. But he was telling me about having to stay late at work and his girlfriend at the time called him up and started yelling at him accusing him of avoiding her. His reply? "Screaming at me doesn't make me want to come home and fuck you." And just... vulgar words of wisdom.

Or like a facebook friend was bragging how her daughter cleaned her room without prompting the other day, so she punished her for not doing it sooner. To motivate her to want to do it more often to keep her happy???? and I just....???? ??? .... ???

Never moving on from the death of an SO being touted as "proof of true love," and conversely, falling in love again being treated like a betrayal of the first partner.
