Granted, I'm not a very good judge of these things, but I was actually impressed by how well done it was and actually spent time trying to figure out where they found an actor who looked so much like RDJ. But I've only seen it once, so maybe it won't hold up on rewatch.

No, I'm with you on this.

They did a shit job with arnie in the newer Terminators, but this one was really well done, I thought.

lol

I guess it was a little creepy, but no worse than skinny Steve IMO.

Yeah, I felt the same about the digital resurrection and de-aging in Rogue One.

That was even worse, tbh.

SPOILERS FOR ROGUE ONE

(Anonymous) 2017-01-03 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to decide which was creepier - Tarkin or Leia. I'm going with Tarkin because he had so much more screen time and it made the uncanny valley more pronounced by there being more opportunity to take it all in. Leia was mostly just creepy because I saw it the day after Carrie Fisher died.

One place I didn't mind it - Tron: Legacy. I think Clu looking kinda weird was okay for a computer program that didn't exist in the real world.

P.S. Was Peter Cushing really that tall?

Am I the only one who wasn't bothered by that? Because everyone is complaining about it, and I just thought it was cool to bring those characters back and thought they did the best they could. It wasn't perfect, but it didn't distract from the movie at all for me. I was able to buy in and believe that was Tarkin and Leia.

Really? I thought it looked pretty damn good. RDJ was goofy looking when he was younger but I bet if you showed someone that clip out of context they would not know it was older RDJ.

CA:CW was definitely the best version I've seen on screen. Westworld tried de-aging Anthony Hopkins but it didn't look nearly as good (budget concerns I expect).

And I'd think casting a different actor would be bring you really out of the movie (not to mention might be hard).

Plus, if they recast they'd have to do the awkward info dump of 'Hello, young college aged Tony Stark. You are definitely Tony Stark and not a cold open character!' (I'll feel silly if they did tht anyway, I haven't seen it since it was in theaters)

I sort of agree, there was something off about it, but I felt the same about aging Peggy in TWS. There's something about it they're not managing to make look quite natural.

[personal profile] sparrow_lately 2017-01-03 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
This is exactly how I feel. It's really cool, but it's not natural at all. It looks fine in a still photograph or even, like, a short clip/gif, but as a sustained scene it starts to feel really bizarre.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-03 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think it was the eyes. They looked a bit too youthful (compared to the rest of her) when you were looking at her from the front.

Also, if I ever get her age, I want her hairdresser.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-03 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
It was their mouths. They can make pretty much anything else look human and normal, but I think there's just too many muscles controlling our mouths that let us form all the intricacies of expressions and sounds..that's the part that still looks off

De-aged Tony in CW wasn't so odd-looking to me, aged-up Peggy Carter in TWS and the CGI dude in Rogue One were the ones that looked the most weird to me, like something around the eyes wasn't quite right and it made them both look pretty uncanny valley.
loracarol: (the spine)

[personal profile] loracarol 2017-01-03 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't this supposed to be, in universe, a kind of "CGI" young Tony Stark, based on Tony's memories? I could be wrong; I've only seen the movie once.

But, that's what I assumed, so it didn't really bother me.

I thought they did a pretty good job.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-03 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
It looked a lot like Robert Downey Jr. in Weird Science (1985), except for the hair (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000375/mediaviewer/rm414971648).

Re: I thought they did a pretty good job.

Wow, I didn't even realize he was in Weird Science (and I saw it multiple times as a kid). How embarrassing!

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-01-03 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't bother me. This sort of thing doesn't bother me. It never looks perfect, but I chalk it up to the level of effects of the time the movie was made. I'm no less able to buy in than I am able to buy in to older movies with effects that don't look realistic at all.

[personal profile] soldatsasha 2017-01-03 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I thought they did a pretty good job. And I thought the slightly unreal thing worked fine since it is meant to be a weird CGI hologram of Tony Stark. It just adds to the surreality of the tech.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-03 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
These things are always a little weird but I thought young RDJ was MUCH better then Rogue One's uncanny valley-ness.

Wow, I didn't know about this

I think it's really neat and as a part of the audience, I like it! But as an actress myself... it's bad news.

OMG ANON, SAME. MY SKIN CRAWLED FOR THE ENTIRE SCENE.

Also, it was a stupid scene; why on earth would you use THAT as a way to introduce student grants?

I thought it looked pretty good. I doubt it would stand up to close scrutiny, but as a casual viewer I was suitably impressed with how well done it was.
