I'm fine with censoring video games for violence

[personal profile] ketita 2017-01-10 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know censorship is a slippery slope yadda yadda but I also don't think there is remotely any need for a video game where the player can mutilate corpses or whatever. Sorry.

Even Mortal Kombat? I mean, massacre was kind of the whole point...

idk, if the sole point of your game is limbs flying, I think it could use a little more content. So yeah. Even Mortal Kombat.

So you'd believe that something like MK shouldn't be made because... YOU feel it needs more content?

I only want censorship from scary things because any time I come across something scary in a video game I have my character do the equivalent of run around in circles while I'm having a panic attack.

I can usually avoid those games though, I only got in trouble with one of the Uncharted games.

It was the spiders, wasn't it?

Re: I'm fine with censoring video games for violence

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
The spiders was one of them but I was able to deal, it was actually the weird people type monsters in the first game that really freaked me out. Especially since the game did my least favorite trope of after introducing the monsters, making a level you have to get out of alone in a dark and spooky place.

I just ran around in circles shooting those things praying for the level to be over.

I played, I think it was Clocktower 2 or 3 or something once, and the fact that your character had frigging panic attacks when something bad was close gave ME panic attacks more than the scary shit on the screen!

I feel like it beats the alternative. If you're going to make a game where you shoot someone thirty times with a submachine gun, it seems dishonest to just have them bloodlessly fall down.

I think there's a real question about visible violence vs. conceptual violence. Either way, I think people are wallowing in violence more than is healthy.

Re: I'm fine with censoring video games for violence

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. I think the vast majority of gamers is aware that violence in the game is not the same as violence in real life. The only people who seem to confuse fiction with reality are usually the pearl-clutching bystanders who don't even play video games - and that's their mental hangup, not the one of the people who actually play.

"Need"

But who are you to decide what's a "need?"

Re: I'm fine with censoring video games for violence

yeah, this is my problem with this line of thought. It's sort of like the "I don't think there's any need to write rape fics" thing or whatever. Fiction serves different purposes for different people.

I know that for me, Hotline Miami was SO IMPORTANT. I mean, I lived in that game for months and months. It helped me work through one of the most complicated knots of my PTSD. "Do you like hurting other people?" was the first time I'd ever been confronted like that in a game or movie or anywhere. But all of that only happened, the question only had weight, because Hotline Miami is a game about hyper-violence, in which the only path you can take is to brutally murder people.

And I'm sure there's a lot of people who could say the same thing about something like Spec Ops: The Line, or any other game that's used violence as a means of storytelling. Even something like Viscera Cleanup Detail, where the gore and violence is just part of the joke... For some people, maybe that's a "need".

Exactly. And what bothers me more is the way some people seem to think they're the sole moral authority on what's acceptable, or at the very least word their opinions to imply as such.

So really, who is anyone to decide what's a "need?"

Honestly I don't think mutilating corpses is even...all that violent? like they're already dead?

I haven't seen any convincing evidence though that violence in video games causes Bad Things IRL so there really is no basis for censoring it.

Re: I'm fine with censoring video games for violence

(Anonymous) 2017-01-10 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I will never understand why people try to equate fictional violence with real life violence. Like, the entire reason that fictional violence is okay is that it's all fake and no one is actually getting hurt.

I can't deal with injuries and stuff in real life, too much blood makes me squeamish and ill. But I'm just fine with blood in the movies because I know it's not real and that the actor isn't really hurt or in pain.

Have you played Spec Ops: The Line? Because that is a game that uses violence in an extremely effective way to make an actual serious point.

And that's a good thing. I haven't played it, but that sounds like an interesting application of VG mechanics, so \o/

tbh, I actually put some thought into what I could say that would be appropriately controversial. Not that I'm trolling, though!

Oh, you an me be enemies now, bro.

*Grrrrrr*

But yeah, there's no need for almost all entertainment media of any content. but if people want it, I don't see a need to stop them from having it.

Re: I'm fine with censoring video games for violence

[personal profile] ketita 2017-01-10 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually disagree. I think there is a real human need for entertainment and media. I think it's important. It's one of the ways that humans shape the way they view and interact with the world around them, pass on cultural messages, process ideas, etc.
And it's exactly for that reason that I don't think media should be a free-for-all. People are fine with the FDA regulating substances that enter the body, but nobody seems remotely willing to apply critical thought to the things that enter their mind.

I'm not talking about some kind of sweeping Morality Police to censor all games ever, or that everything has to be My Little Pony dress-up. But I think a look at what is being desired and what is being rewarded is legitimate.
And I definitely don't think that people wanting something is necessarily a justification for anything. People want lots of things. People want to drive through red lights.
