The sex scene back then was so hot haha~

I always felt bad for liking this series (OVA and books) because it's hot and interesting but it's also very literally rapey. And even though it doesn't really treat it as anything other than what it is, I still feel guilty.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a tough one because there is actually a lot of world-building, and while none of the sci-fi elements are probably unique to the genre, they are still pretty well developed. There's quite a lot of plot in the books that isn't romance/yaoi, and even in the original anime, I actually think the story is interesting.

Sure, the Iason/Riki stuff gives me sexy shivers, rapetastic or not, but porn aside, the plot is pretty cool. Also, the ending was pretty great, much better than a happily-ever-after.

Yeah I liked that it wasn't a HEA ending when realistically that would never have been possible.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
But it never pretends the raping is good. I think the entire premise was that it was bad, and the ending confirmed that.

The Original AnK cartoon was LEGIONS better than the remake.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the remake was ever finished, so that is probably safe to say, yes!

I was excited about the remake though because it was going to go through more of the earlier story, whereas the original anime just started the story after Rikki left Iason.

While the original OAVs will always be my favorite, if I ever became, like, billionaire-type-rich, one of my pipe dreams would be to fund the remaining 9 episodes they were supposed to do of the remake.

Just because, in my mind, there can never be too much AnK.

The original had Kaneto Shiozawa, and for me thus surpasses the remake.

I wish there were more serious, plot-centric and alternative genre BL anime out there. I mean, Ai no Kusabi is certainly a BL, but it's also plot and sci-fi focused, and despite being such a defining title in the BL genre, I also feel it transcends it. There's a lot of non-romantic plot, and even the romance plot, while very intensely "yaoi-esque", is treated really viciously. I mean, when *spoilers* it ends with Rikki literally getting his dick chopped off, Iason gets his legs blasted off, and they double-suicide, I think it's safe to say it's not quite the same ballpark as Junjou Romantica.

Anyone have any other recs? The only other serious-plot epic that has gay sex I can think of is Mirage of Blaze. I guess the connecting factor is that both are based off of novels, not manga.

RA

I was wondering if anyone was going to bring up Mirage of Blaze. That anime left me feeling uncomfortable and confused. But I will agree it was plot heavy. I almost want to watch it again.

No shame in that, OP. I've never been huge on Iason or Riki specifically, but the original AnK is pretty great, especially by 'old anime' standards. At a time when most anime were fucking awful, AnK managed to have stunning character animation, multiple coherent subplots, a cast of sympathetic morally grey characters, a cool (somewhat cheesy but well-explained) sci-fi setting, unflinching but non-gratuitous violence, AND smokin' hot gay sex. Plus one of my favorite endings of all time.

Back in the day I made an Ai no Kusabi AMV... I wonder if I still have a backup somewhere.

I'm full of so much love for everyone in this thread right now.

I love AnK because it's so fascinating. The characters, relationships, world are all so interesting and pretty disturbing. When I first saw the OVAs, and then read up to further understand what was going on, I stayed up all night unable to sleep because I couldn't stop thinking about the insinuations/repercussions of such a society.

I AM SO GLAD THERE ARE STILL FANS OF THE ORIGINAL OVA STILL OUT THERE!
Not OP btw just a lurker whose dorky heart just burst
