If you mean as an example of how to do it right and be a loveable person for all the people doing it so very wrong, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-22 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. Of course there should be more characters of all kinds, but I also have to wonder why you lay such an emphasis on the neck beard aspect and all of that and where you're coming from with this view. I hate to be weird and skeptical but I am weird and skeptical.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-22 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, it's because OP is a neckbeards and wants characters like him.

I can kind of see where they're coming from. I've gamed with so many nice, cool people who fit the physical stereotypes of being fat and bearded nerds but are nothing like the way those characters tend to be portrayed in insults or as the awkward, pervy butt of jokes in shows.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Why does the beard aspect make you weird and skeptical, if you are otherwise agreeing?

Yeah, that's not ever going to happen. Partly because that's not what production companies and advertisers think people want to see and they're probably right, and partly because...people ARE the things you say you don't want this character to be about. We are made up of our experiences, and a fat nerdy neckbeard is going to have different experience BECAUSE he's a fat, nerdy neckbeard.

Couldn't you apply the same reasoning to say that every overweight yaoi fangirl has to be bitter and single, no exceptions?

I'm totally with you until the neckbeard part. It's a hideous facial hair choice and I'd just have too difficult a time buying that a "normal, well adjusted" character would deliberately choose to sport one.

Yes. This. I hate all that stubble down the neck, its just gross. Trim it up!

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I think I love you

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I tell you, OP, the lack of positive representation of neckbeards in mass media is the number one issue that keeps me up at night! How shall we ever move on as a society without one, just ONE positive representation of this trod-upon, marginalized, severely underrepresented group???

I weep bitter tears just thinking about it! *goes sob in a corner*

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
The hell is your issue?

I sorta get this

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
This reminds me of some of my male friends who fulfill this stereotype to some extent (overweight, not conventionally attractive, hairy, nerdy, STEM student, etc.) but they also very much go against the stereotype in certain ways, such as being really chill and accepting of women and LGBT people and having non-traditionally masculine (and non-neckbeardy) hobbies as well: like cooking/baking/cheese making or theater.

I'd be totally up for a character like this so long as they're likable and not an obvious author self insert

Maybe only to show them how to do it right, like you said. Otherwise, no.

Jerry on H50 counts

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Jerry on H50 is a neckbeard and he is well-loved.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-2815175/Jorge-Garcia-makes-Hawaii-Five-0.html

He's a conspiracy theorist, and is all the time coming up with data that solves cases. And he is a featured character in the credits and beloved by everyone, although admittedly it took them a while to get past his weirdness and take him seriously. But I think that makes it more real. Anyway, he definitely counts, OP. No one makes fun of him for being fat. It never comes up. He goes on dates (has interesting girlfriends) babysits for Danny, etc. He's ohana.

Doc Robbins on CSI

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think part of it is that a neckbeard (the actual beard) is generally a sign of being slovenly, far more than the weight or anything else.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
sorry but characters like that aren't attractive to people and that doesn't really fly in entertainment

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
So with you on this. I know plenty of nice, plump dudes with decent facial hair who deserve heroic representation, and not as sidekicks. I like looking at hot, muscular guys but Chris Pratt was a chubby buddy before he became Mr. Hunk America and I liked him back then too.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-23 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
sorry, but nice normal well-adjusted people don't grow neckbeards. beards sure, mustaches sure, stubble sure. but if you're growing a disgusting beard at the neck you are disturbed.

Lost was an ensemble, but Hurley was one of the sweetest, most genuine and good people on it. He had his problems as a person but everybody loved and trusted him and he was a funny guy but he was never a joke just because he was fat.
