I don't want to get into this debate, but I do want to point out to OP and to several people in this thread that "trans person" is two words, not one (same with "trans woman"). "Trans" is an adjective and should function like one; using it as a prefix implies on a grammatical level that trans people are something actually different from just....people.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You do know that half the people who read your comment just decided to go back to using the word tranny because of the preachy tone. Get off your soapbox, you are not helping.

the irony of you having kate mckinnon, known transphobe, as your icon made me lol

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
luckily my comment wasn't directed at transphobic assholes itching for a reason to use slurs!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
C'mon. I decided to make a conscious effort to use "transwoman" from now on, but not tranny.

DON'T TELL ME WHAT I CAN'T DO.

If my comment came out as sarcastic, it wasn't. I meant it sincerely, but I realize that tone can be hard to read in just text.

If you actually think I should leave because you read my comment sincerely and think that I shouldn't have thanked the OP, then you can leave, preferably walking barefoot over Legos.

Either or.

+1!

I'm not sure that nitpicking peoples' grammar for social justice reasons is inherently better than nitpicking peoples' grammar in general, but... thanks, I guess? Sorry I mis-typed.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Using it as a prefix implies on a grammatical level that transpeople are different from cispeople.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
All I can say is next month it'll be trans~person and the month after that it's trans%person% and then 'person with trans' and who knows what it'll be the month after that and you'll be corrected for using 'trans person' so just chill.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's how language works. Compound words exist and are not insults just because they exist. A fireman is still a man, a waitperson is still a person, a thunderstorm is still a storm, a watermelon is a melon. Yes, these words differentiate, but they can be just further clarification out of a general category.

+1

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
but what about Grape Nuts, anon

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you're trans, your opinion on this doesn't really matter though.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
newsflash: gender now affects your ability to understand grammar

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
As a 'trans' as you put it, I really hate being condescended to and treated like I'm too stupid to figure out if someone's being nasty or not because of something so complicated as compound words.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
And the English language usually writing compound words as two separate words is causing MAJOR problems in several Scandinavian languages because compound words are always written as one word here and people are having HUGE difficulties remembering to do that because of all the English they are exposed to.

Just to point out a different problem!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for saying this and sorry that people in FS predictably took your mild mannered correction as some kind of SJW rampage, rme...
