[Caitlyn Jenner]

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? It's funny, because I think of Laverne Cox as the go-to Hollywood transwoman. But since Bruce Jenner was so famous even when I was a little kid, it makes sense that Jenner is now the one people think of. I guess Laverne Cox is still one of the most famous for both being trans and playing a trans character. Whereas Caitlyn Jenner was already famous for other reasons and then transitioned, which takes some courage.

Yeah if someone says "most famous trans woman" I immediately think "Laverne Cox"

I don't really think about Caitlyn Jenner unless I'm reminded of her...she's just kind of an ass

Didn't she kill a woman? I guess no one cares anymore.

Caitlyn Jenner is the soul of the woman that Bruce killed in the car accident that possessed him after her death.

I feel bad for her... but I still lol'd at that bottom tweet.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
But she's generally an asshole of a person anyway, so I have a hard time feeling even a little bit sorry for her and how she was obviously being used as a token.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Caitlyn is just learning what it means to lose her male privilege.

All transwomen go through that phase, and the more male privilege and the more they are used to being listened to they had in their male lives, the bigger that bump is. Every transwoman predicted this moment coming ever since she pulled that stunt of appointing herself transambassador to the Republican Party as was certain she was going to get them to abandon their bathroom bills and general anti-trans dickery. She was speaking like she was still Bruce back then, and this is her landing in the land of women.

Harsh landing, but she'll adapt.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I never thought of it that way, but that's interesting.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't think this is the correct analysis of the situation. It seems more likely that Caitlyn Jenner just has broadly center-right politics and underestimated the strength of political policies of transphobic or homophobic bigotry in the Republican Party. Which is a result of her political views, not male privilege.

I mean - and correct me if I'm misunderstanding you here - but according to this analysis, it would seem to follow that if a cis man had shown up to try and lead a Republican fight against bathroom dickery, that would have had more of an effect? And I am fairly certain that's not the case. No one could have done that and the mistake Jenner made was thinking that it was remotely possible for anyone to make Republicans listen on the issue. I don't think that Jenner would have been successful making the same case if she were a cis man.

That's actually a very valid point of view that I had not thought of. Interesting.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well said, couldn't agree more!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure I feel schadenfreude, but I don't feel sorry for her at all. You'd have to REALLY have your head stuck in the sand not to realize that the GOP aren't going to be a transperson's BFF, even if you're rich. Jenner's wealth and fame offers her some protection, maybe, but it's not going to change attitudes overnight.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want to get into this debate, but I do want to point out to OP and to several people in this thread that "trans person" is two words, not one (same with "trans woman"). "Trans" is an adjective and should function like one; using it as a prefix implies on a grammatical level that trans people are something actually different from just....people.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You do know that half the people who read your comment just decided to go back to using the word tranny because of the preachy tone. Get off your soapbox, you are not helping.

I'm not sure that nitpicking peoples' grammar for social justice reasons is inherently better than nitpicking peoples' grammar in general, but... thanks, I guess? Sorry I mis-typed.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Using it as a prefix implies on a grammatical level that transpeople are different from cispeople.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
All I can say is next month it'll be trans~person and the month after that it's trans%person% and then 'person with trans' and who knows what it'll be the month after that and you'll be corrected for using 'trans person' so just chill.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-06 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's how language works. Compound words exist and are not insults just because they exist. A fireman is still a man, a waitperson is still a person, a thunderstorm is still a storm, a watermelon is a melon. Yes, these words differentiate, but they can be just further clarification out of a general category.

+1

You shouldn't feel happy over this so I'm glad you don't tbh- call her an idiot or roll your eyes at the obvious, but I think it'd be pretty tacky to feel glee over a situation that affects at-risk underage trans children most of all, and won't hurt Caitlyn whatsoever. Despite how stupid it may be to support the Republican Party as a trans woman, she won't be the one suffering for that choice.
