Looking to get into a new fandom

(Anonymous) 2017-03-05 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I am floating around fandom-less and have decided it's time to dive in somewhere. But nothing is really grabbing my interest lately. So, looking for recs!

I prefer TV shows for my fandom, with a strong leaning towards scifi and fantasy. Doesn't have to be new, but preferably a strong fandom so I can lose myself in looking at all the goodies.

Previous fandoms include X-Men, Gundam Wing, Stargate, Bandom (mostly Panic!), Teen Wolf, MCU/Avengers, and briefly Inception.

Shadowhunters, Wynonna Earp, The Magicians

I can't do Magicians because my hate for the books is strong. But I am intrigued by Wynonna Earp and have not yet heard about Shadowhunters. I shall go look into them now!

Depending on how long you've been in fandom, this may or may not dissuade you, but Shadowhunters is based on Cassandra Claire's (of Harry Potter fic major plagiarism debacle fame) Mortal Instruments books.

I've been around long enough to know and hate CC so yeah, skipping that one! I would have found out eventually, but thanks for saving me some time anon!

I cannot recommend Deep Space Nine highly enough.

Yeah? I loved Voyager but not the fandom. I remember watching TNG and some DS9 and enjoying it, but never really considered fandom for some reason. I'll have to go back and watch. I recall liking...Dax and Kira? I think that was their names.

This may seem obvious, but: Star Trek? That fandom's not going away soon. If you don't like one show, you can try another, etc. Plus, there should be a new show coming out soon so that might liven things up. If you like the team dynamic, different types of eps, positive outlook on humanity & future from Stargate, you'll like ST.

Ha, second anon to rec it! So obvious, but I honestly never thought about it. Maybe because while I genuinely enjoyed Voyager I remember really hating the fandom. I think I'm going to go back and watch Deep Space 9 and see if I can get hooked into that.

I was a big Voyager fan back in the day, but maybe too young to get into the fandom? I read lots of fic and that was pretty much it. DS9 is the only one I never really watched. It started slow and by the time it got good it also had a very serialized plot. So it was hard to see an ep here and there. I only saw TOS for the first time a few years back but was surprised at how well it held up. Yes, some of it is cheesy and the effects are ridiculous, but the writing is amazing most of the time. TNG got me hooked when I was about 7, which means it's special to me even though I don't remember all that much of it anymore. ENT isn't brilliant, but also not nearly as bad as people claim it is.

Season 2 of Attack on Titan is coming out next month.

Well

There's Supernatural, but I can't say I would recommend the fandom - it's definitely going strong though.

There's Once Upon a Time, but, again, I can't say I would recommend the fandom.

There's the CW's DC shows (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow).

Merlin, though the show has been over for a while, there's still stuff being produced.
