I really enjoy my writing too. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

This secret is aesthetically cute, and I support the sentiment. Some of my stuff I look back on and really enjoy. There's fanfic I've written upwards of a decade ago, so long ago I hardly remember what happens, and when I go back to it I'm a huge fan.

Nothing wrong with that! Sure, it's good for authors to be critical of their own work where needed, but it's also good to have that confidence in and appreciation of your abilities as well. It helps keep you motivated.

And if that confidence helps you in other areas of your life as well, then all the better :).

There are fic authors whose style I prefer to my own-- things I struggle with seem to come easily for them, and there's a smoothness in reading their stuff whereas I always second-guess a lot of my phrasing.

But when it comes to originality, I still love my own creations best. My plots and scenarios and headcanons are always going to interest me most. I realize this is probably true for many writers, though.

Did you break into my mind and write this secret? Because same.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-07 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with liking your own writing, OP. I'm not happy with every single thing I've written, but there are stories that make me smile because I feel proud for having written them.

Same here. For my part, I also re-read because I'm the only writer in several of my fandoms. If I didn't write the stories down, I'd have to re-imagine them every time, which is too much like hard work. (Not that writing them isn't hard work as well.)

It makes sense to me.

I write things that are interesting to me, plot-wise, character-wise, writing-wise, or some combination of the three.

I like my writing too, but that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate other peoples' writing as well.

I hate the culture and concept that you have to always be putting yourself or your work down or else you're arrogant or something. Author's Notes that start with saying how awful the story is and apologizing drive me nuts! Good on you for taking pride in your work and recognizing the benefits of it, even if only to yourself!

I could have written the first part of this in my sleep XD it didn't used to be that way, but I've gotten better, and fonder of my own writing over the years.

On the other hand, I don't think I'm a particularly great wordsmith. I'm not bad, but I think I'm more functional than anything else. I like my plots, though.

I am far from my favorite fic writer, but I enjoy my pieces. I reread them once in a while, and I enjoy them. I even still enjoy my really early pieces; they're far from perfect, but they're decent.

This is me right now. I fell back in love with a now-cancelled series I hadn't watched in a few years and it's sparked a massive desire to write a continuation. I've been absolutely engrossed for the past few weeks with my story have spent entire days reading and re-reading my own work. The best part about it is, I can change it at any time.

I'm really glad you can look back on and fully enjoy your own writing-- not only is there nothing wrong with it, I think it's really good. Like... if you put a lot of time and effort into any art form, you should take pleasure out of what you create. And writing for yourself first is a really good thing.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-07 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's anything wrong with liking your own writing. In fact I think it makes sense that you would.

But liking your writing best, over every other fanfic writer's work? Ehh...I mean, you can't help how you feel, but that just doesn't seem like a realistic or beneficial mindset.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-08 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I can actually understand the mindset. The OP is most likely writing to all his/her favorite tropes/kinks/character types/etc. Reading others' stories always has the potential for the story to take a turn you don't like, or a clunky line that a character "wouldn't say" in your own headcanon to throw you out of a story. Or in, for example, my case, there simply isn't any fic in my most beloved fandoms that hit all my kink buttons.

So I am one of my own favorite smut writers, since the fic is tailored to me.

The only other way you could maybe, possibly find that is if you're insanely lucky to find a mindtwin, or pay someone to write precisely what you want.

That's why I don't think there's anything wrong with liking your own stuff best.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-10 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I'm my biggest fan too! I keep rereading my stories and I cannot even understand how I could've written something so good. I always write for myself, the kind of stories I didn't find but wanted to read. I'm also good at writing due to my job and other related things and there's nothing wrong admitting it. Especially when it's true.
