I don't see how "falling in with the wrong crowd" as a teenager has any bearing on Snape as a man in his 30s bullying 11 year olds? At some point you have to grow up, and Snape didn't.

What James did was shitty. 100% shitty. But James making shit decisions to hurt others as a 15 year old is quite different than Snape making them at 30.

It's not that much of a shock that the suicidal guy who was already a victim of abuse and filled with self-loathing would have issues getting along with kids.

What evidence of suicidal ideation?

Listen I sympathise with people who deal with terrible things, have rough upbringings etc. But there comes a time in your life where you take responsibility for your own life and Snape never did it.

He doesn't "have issues getting along with kids", he specifically sets out to create a hurtful environment in his classroom. When people are afraid, they cannot learn effectively. It's no wonder Neville was no good at Potions - he was terrified the whole time. By Snape. On purpose.

From Book 7:

“Her son lives. He has her eyes, precisely her eyes. You remember the shape and color of Lily Evans’s eyes, I am sure?”

“DON’T!” bellowed Snape. “Gone… dead…”

“Is this remorse, Severus?”

“I wish… I wish I were dead…”

“And what use would that be to anyone?” said Dumbledore coldly.

There's no evidence that he still felt that way 10 years later when we see him bullying the children in his care.

Sure, 'cause everyone just randomly gets over their unresolved suicidal ideations. That's definitely how suicide and trauma works.

When he expressed that desire to die he had literally just found out that the women he loved had been murdered. There's no reason to expect that 10 years later he still feels the same.

I've struggled with suicidal ideation for seven years after my best friend was killed in a drunk driving accident. It doesn't go away.

I'm sorry that this happened to you but that is one anecdotal story and there's no reason to suppose it applies to Snape.

I blame Dumbledore, it is just easier.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-07 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, Dumbledore should never have made Snape a teacher. He should have made him Madame Pomfrey's pharmacist or something.

As a suicida, self loathingl person with a history of abuse: its still your responsibility to not perpetuate abuse or abuse others. Mental illness or history of abuse is in no way an excuse to harm others, especially children you have power over.

Snape was a mean teacher, he wasn't abusive.

nayrt

What utter horseshit. If you don't consider Snape to be an abusive teacher, then you have no idea what abuse is.

Tell me what he did that's abusive.

Bullying is abusive. Threatening to kill a child's pet, mocking a child for being smart and wanting to learn, joining in with children in bullying a child for her appearance, repeatedly threatening to drug people you don't like, etc. and so forth -- this is abusive behavior when it's coming from someone who is in a position of power over a child, like a teacher.

Perhaps working as a teacher wasn't the best plan then.
