What are your favorite portrayals of religious or mythical figures?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-22 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
So God, Satan, other angels, Anubis, Zeus, Shiva, etc.

I'm really uncomfortable with all of it.

Unless you count Loki as a religious figure. I enjoy all kinds of interpretations of Loki, but then I don't think of it as religious, or even mythological, I suppose. Because I discovered them as "old stories" that's all I think of them as, I guess, and interpretations are cool, whereas I'm uncomfortable with religious figures being made into fictional characters in general. Anything about angels and demons makes me cringe, etc.

I kind of relate to that. In the sense that in many cases, either I find the portrayal so far from any type of "reality" that I view it as some kind of random fantasy and disassociate it mentally from the religious source, or if it is striving for some sort of authenticity I disagree with how it's shown, and then feel a little uncomfortable.

I'm probably most okay with things like more minor angels and such, because the stakes are lower with them.

Bit of an obvious answer, but Lord of Light by Zelazny is very good at this.

Also, Blake

I think my favourite screen Devil is still John Glover in Brimstone, all cruelty and petty malice and domestic banter and the odd hints of hidden depths.

A similar show, The Collector, had my favourite. He'd take the form of a different random bystander each time he shows up to talk to Morgan.

Morgan Freeman as God in Bruce Almighty.

For my favorite Satan I have to go with sort of funny original!Lucifer in Supernatural OR menacing/creepy Lucifer in Constantine.

For some reason, the first thing I thought of was Futurama's computer that collided with God or whatever from the episode Godfellas.

Lucifer in the comics of the same name. (Conversely, I find Carey's making Idun and Skald men baffling, at best.)

Various versions of Lucifer and Loki in the Megaten series are fun. (Quite a few other deities get interesting takes, but aside from the original novels, L&L are the only ones to get any actual characterization in the ones I'm familiar with.)

God and Satan, oops, I mean the Supreme Being and Evil from Time Bandits.

Buddha and Jesus are pretty cool, as is the old mother goddess. Also I like Quan Yin, She Who Dries the Tears of the World.

Good example: Trelane from the original Star Trek. TNG's Q wasn't really onboard with the "these puny creatures must see me as one of their myths" gameplan.

Bad example, also from the original Star Trek: "Sir...not the Sun-God...the Son of God" (Bread and Circuses). Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah but no.

American Gods is good, in that it's basically a roadtrip through various mythologies, and their forgotten gods.

Bonus: Charlton Heston is literally Moses. Fight me.

Ahaha, I think that's why I liked him more than Trelane, in the end. Q felt like a total fuck-up of a god-like being, and it was pretty well insinuated that he was an outcast from the majority of the Continuum because of it. Like, he pesters people pretty much because he's just a weirdo. I love that about him.

Obvs. not a serious portrayal, but I really love Hades in Disney's Hercules.

I really enjoy the Jesse James Dawson series by KA Stewart.

The Screwtape Letters' portrayal of the demonic "Lowerarchy" is really interesting and also hilarious. I've always loved that book, especially the hints it gives of how incredibly dysfunctional and barely-restrained-psychotic they all are.

Hades in the Disney Hercules movie, though it's not accurate to his actual mythology counterpart I really enjoyed James Woods performance. It works. (Other evil!Hades versions bug me though, which is odd but whatever).

I liked the initial versions of the angels in SPN because they were cold and alien, but the longer that went on it fell apart a bit, still neat though.

The Dogma versions of angels and God were also cool.

And while not actual gods I liked how Stargate did the whole 'super-powerful aliens that primitive humans worshiped as gods' idea, the Goa'uld's aesthetic in general I just really liked.

I have a soft spot for Thoth and Anubis in general, but especially how they're portrayed as funeral home staff in American Gods. It's a short appearance in a dense novel, but it kinda stuck with me.

It's sort of sacrilege in terms of accuracy, but no one's ever going to top Disney's version of Hades for me. He was absolutely the best part of that movie.

I adore Aphrodite's depiction in Disney's Hercules TV show. She's focused on loving, accepting, and being confident in yourself...and is 90% of the time the opposite of an airhead, which is simply refreshing. Their Athena was pretty fun, too. She was not above trolling people and deathly serious about her owl.
