What are your instant turn offs for characters that would normally attract you?

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-04-04 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there character traits that are instant turn offs, even when the character is played by an actor you are normally extremely attracted to or the character is normally one you would be attracted to?

Inspired because I finally saw the new Beauty and the Beast. And Luke Evans is usually someone I find gorgeous. I usually like villains. Arrogance is not a problem. But, turns out, willful ignorance and book-hating is an instant turn off on even a normally very hot man for me.

misogyny
"dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women." This can show up in many ways.

sexual assault, or pressuring someone for sex
(I feel like this should go without saying)

Smoking. I don't care how many times people say it looks cool. It does absolutely nothing for me.

I never cared either way until I quit smoking and now it is my biggest turn off. Very cliche but I'm ok with that.

Cheating seems to be a big one...I mean, I even understand why some people do it, but for a guy I should be attracted to it's not a great quality.

Intolerant, bigoted views (like racism, sexism, homophobia). related: openly supporting very right-leaning parties or politicians.

Having kids seems to be a big one, too.

Is reaaally into sports as a spectator sport. Strangely, I have much less hangups about someone actually playing sports, but, example: rabid soccer fans.

Yes! I can't stand cheating in canon or fanon.

Cheating is the biggest turn-off ever for me. Anything I feel for a character shuts down the instant it shows up, even if the circumstances are pretty understandable.

thisthisthis

and there are VERY FEW instances where it's understandable and even then it just turns me off instantly m

most of the time in fiction it boils down to "don't want to have to deal with hurting the person" anyway, which riles me so hard.

Yes, I want to be able to admire characters I spend time with, and "can't keep their underpants on when they should" isn't an admirable quality.

It extends to permitted adultery or infidelity too. You made a vow, you stick to it, or break up. Don't go trying to have your cake and eat it. If it's a historical canon, the bargain has still been struck and if the character wants to keep the advantages of the bargain he has to keep the promises he made too. (Slightly less mad when it's a female stuck in an abusive relationship because of power gradient, danger of death, etc.)

If people have an open marriage, if they're both okay with it, I don't see why that's so horrible.

The accent that I associate with people strongly affects my attraction to them. For example, I watched House for ages before finding out that Hugh Laruie was actually British! So when I heard his real voice, I hated it! And I am only attracted to him when he's doing an American accent. Or like, when Anne Hathaway had an English accent in this one movie that I cannot remember the name of, I hated hearing it because my brain kept going, "Fake! That's not her voice!" That's happened with others as well, but I can't think of their names off the top of my head.

I'm so used to Hugh Laurie's British accent, the dissonance between what I'm expecting and what I'm hearing when he's playing House messes me up so bad! I think it's just for Hugh Laurie though, I usually don't notice accents much. He's just so Bertie Wooster, or one half of Fry and Laurie, to me.

Re: What are your instant turn offs for characters that would normally attract you?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-04 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I was already familiar with Hugh Laurie's natural accent so it was his American one that threw me at first!

Same for me. I was so used to Hugh Laurie's regular accent that House was off for me at first, and it took time to get used to his American accent. I've had the same problems watching Alan Cumming and Rupert Graves doing American accents. My brain just doesn't want to accept it.

Boringness. I don't care who plays her, I have never liked Jean Grey. And I usually dig on redheads so hard.

The sad thing is, Jean is not a boring character per se. Though the movies did not do her justice. She had some great moments in the comics.

Pettiness. People like that garbagepile in the Oval Office who can't let any perceived slight, however small, go without retaliation, and all they see are perceived slights. It's so embarrassing and repulsive.

Actually, I'll expand that to include anything that reveals weakness of character or will -- pettiness, cowardice, harmful self-indulgence (like infidelity), wishy-washy opportunism, sniveling, etc.

I can love villains with great enthusiasm, and all sorts of other characters whom I wouldn't want to befriend in real life, but if they're small-minded, petty, or weak....nah. Gross.

E: Unless they're funny. Like GOB Bluth. <3

Hurting animals, like that's a huge turn off. Which is also silly because I'll like a villain that kills countless fictional people just fine but the moment they harm an animal I'm out.

Smoking, I don't find it cool just gross.

The only thing I can think of that's an automatic turn-off is an abusive character. Abusive husbands/fathers in particular, but also just anyone who is abusive toward the people around them. Gaslighting is a big thing too... I hate gaslighting.

Abusive to women and children.

Re: What are your instant turn offs for characters that would normally attract you?

Mostly things that point to someone being a shitty person. Being abusive (whether to people or animals), cheating on their significant other, being bigoted in whatever way (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. - and like kallanda mentioned, being very right-wing tends to go along with this), and just being a dick in general. Also religious fundamentalists.

And I'm with you on book-hating. Every time I meet one of those people who seems proud of the fact that they never read, my opinion of them instantly goes way down.

Re: What are your instant turn offs for characters that would normally attract you?

I think for me there are differences between what I'm attracted in a character and what I'm attracted to in real life. Like, I'm very into fictional villains. They can do awful things, and as long as they are intelligent and attractive to me I'll still be into them. There are limits to that like what I mentioned above as well as things like abuse and hurting animals and such.

But while arrogance doesn't stop me from being attracted in fictional characters, for example, or being a villain who has murdered and done generally horrible things, morals are pretty important in attraction for me in real life. Arrogance is a massive turn off in real life. But in fictional characters for some reason it can be attractive?

I'm not sure how to explain it, but The Mosquito Coast is a good example. I barely got very far into that movie before I had to stop the tape and return it to the library unfinished, and not even Harrison Ford could save it for me.

Going into a completely new environment and not only assuming you know how to succeed, but believing you will do better than people who've lived there their whole lives. There are untapped resources just waiting for someone to come and take advantage! It's all so easy and it's not at all suspicious no one else is doing this!

Also, slightly different but similar: that kid Into the Wild was about. (Never saw the movie, but I'd read a book years ago.) I guess I just hate a certain brand of hubris that encourages really bad decisions.
