I agree. It's one of the reasons why I don't wanna watch the TV show. The producers, directors, and writers obviously see rape as the go-to for quick drama and don't actually care about portraying it respectfully or realistically, smh. šŸ˜’

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
So you also agree that it's okay to call Theon's physical/mental/sexual abuse "manpain"? Nice double standards.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I never said that shitstain.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-07 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Theon's a sexual abuse victim himself and you're calling it 'manpain'? K

Wrong term to use given that he was sexually abused by the same person previously, but it is a valid point that Sansa is the one being raped in that moment, not Theon, and yet the showrunners chose to focus on Theon's pain in that moment rather than the actual person being raped.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Except it's obvious they were simply not showing it for the sake of not showing it, not for the sake of focusing on Theon's pain. Discretion shots are a thing.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Discretion shots in Game of Thrones. Sure.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, in Sansa's case I can believe it. When the actress is someone who started out as a thirteen year old on the show, it's easy to believe they just didn't want to get graphic with her.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like D&D/the writers thought they were being really arty and respectful by not showing rape for once only to have that blow up in their faces because they're just that out of touch.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt This sounds like a far more likely explanation than the "Discretion shots are a thing" anon suggested.

Actually, even the producers have lines they will not cross, such as when Robert's infant bastard was killed. Sure, they killed the poor kid, but it's not like they showed it.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
... nah. Sorry, but nah, I just don't buy that. The director had a choice of where (and who) the camera focuses upon during Sansa's rape and they chose to do a close up of Theon's face. They could've chosen:

* Ramsay's face to highlight the gleeful brutality of his character
* hands clenching sheets to put us on the periphery of the act without showing the act itself
* a pullback shot of, I dunno, the window of the bedchamber with Sansa's screams in the background
* a shot of the other children's direwolves in a forest somewhere, throwing back their heads and howling like there's a disturbance in the Force

Etc.

What did they pick? Theon's face, for the purpose of showing how Sansa's rape affected him. It wasn't by accident, it wasn't because Theon's face is the only available alternative to showing a graphic rape.

Theon's face, for the purpose of showing how Sansa's rape affected him

I interpreted it as highlighting that what's happening to her is horrific and hard to watch. Kinda like how the audience feels. Maybe you need to stop watching shit through a batshit feminist pov, anon.

'threat of mutilation" .... isn't he already mutilated (genitally)? Was Ramsay going to cut off his limbs next?

("Boxing Greyjoy")

(Anonymous) 2017-04-07 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about the show, but in the books Ramsay threatens to cut Theon's tongue off and nail it to the wall if Jeyne isn't wet enough.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Can people stop referring to Theon's abuse as "manpain"? The guy has been literally tortured and suffered genital mutilation. Would you be referring to the shit he goes through with such a derogatory handwave term if he had been female, OP?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I swear some people are so low on empathy.

I mean yeah they should have focused more sympathy on the character actually being raped. but Theon is just as much a victim as his abuser's female victims.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I mean I hate it when neckbeards go "but what about the MEN?! m-muh double standards!!" whenever anyone brings up how particularly awful GOT is towards women, but the fandom's treatment of Theon (from both male/female fans) just rubs me the wrong way. Between making fun of his genital mutilation, saying he deserves it, acting like he hasn't actually suffered, or writing off his abuse as manpain, it's all just really gross.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Except the secret says nothing about how Theon's abuse is "manpain". It's specifically referring to Theon's anguish while Sansa is being raped as "manpain". You could argue that isn't a good definition either, but at least this doesn't misidentify what you're objecting to.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Theon is a fucking victim of Ramsay, denoting anything to do with Theon in this context as "manpain" is horrendous and also incorrect considering manpain implies the male in question has not undergone any actual pain. It absolutely does misidentify it and the fact that you're arguing about this shows a lack of critical thought on your part. Imagine if you were this blase about a female character who had her genitals cut up.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Manpain: When a male character's backstory related-angst breaks out, usually in isolation, brooding, douchebaggery, control or trust issues, misbehavior, crying a single tear, etc."

"When a grown man has the emotional life of an angsty teenager he is said to be experiencing manpain, especially if he tries to compensate with macho behavior."

If you think these are applicable to the character that has been starved, beaten, mutilated, forced to sleep with dogs, referred to as an "it", made to be someone's pet, had their identity stripped away, forced to be naked and bathe in front of their abuser, and had their genitals mutilated, then kindly go fuck yourself.

I see secrets like this, and I read the comments, and I honestly wonder if you guys actually feel this way or if you're just trying to show how Ideologically Pure you are. I really feel sorry for you if this is how you consume media, and you can't watch a TV show without picking it apart from this weird moralizing feminist viewpoint.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
See the comment above this. Your comment is stupid.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-08 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious about what you mean by "weird" and "moralizing". The way that I think of it is that, like, this is an aspect of reality. I do want to enjoy movies and TV shows and stuff, but I also don't think that it's either possible or right to ignore this aspect of movies and TV shows in order to enjoy things.

Like, if you disagree with the argument on the merits, make the argument on the merits. If you disagree with the basic systemic-patriarchy-exists-and-is-a-bad-thing point of view, argue against it. But I don't understand the point of just saying that it's moralizing and therefore somehow bad?
