Which old/dead fandoms do you miss?

Harry Potter.

I mean, it's still there, but it's mostly Harry/Draco porn and ranting about one thing or another. I get it, Snape was a stalker and Lily was an innocent victim. I get it, Snape wasn't a stalker and Lily was a judgmental whore. I get it, Draco/Voldemort/the Whomping Willow was the real hero of the stories. I get it, JK Rowling just tweets for the money. What happened to just liking the books, and writing fic about the books?

I'd be down for that. Are you looking for gen fic? While I mostly read certain pairings, I was surprised that there was still activity. And lately I'm meeting people who are into it and we just talk about the books and characters etc.

Rereading the books, and I miss the general conversations, too. I wasn't always active in the fandom, but when I was involved, it was fun.

I wish Parks and Recreation had had a larger fandom to start with, but I miss squeeing about that show.

I posted a parody to (related to Trump and his treatment of the national Parks Department), and literally no one said anything. Granted, maybe it just wasn't a good parody, but I was like "aw, this fandom really is dead." Which sucked as I spent hours on it.

I feel like people still have a lot of affection for Parks it's just not an organized fandom, more people making random jokes with each other

Also it's gotten weirdly politically signified

The Dark Knight Rises. I liked the Bane/Blake pairing because size kink.

I am still hoping DBZ will get a resurgence.

I miss 90s Ranma fandom. It was the best. It was crazy. It was all over the place because half the fandom was more a fan f the concept than Ranma itself as they had access to the cartoons or manga and were just going off the fandon versions and other fanfics. It gave some great permutations.

I also miss 1990s Pratchett fandom, when it was just alt.fan.pratchett and a few geocities sites.

That tender Ranma/Ryouga stuff. So unlike canon, but those fics so much fun.

I'll take any Ranma/Ryouga tenderfic recs, from anyone.

A few years ago I wanted to check out if there was some Ranma slash around and I just couldn't get into it because it's so very 90s/early 2000s in how it treats slash. All the "Warning: contains slash", DLDR rants, yaoi stereotypes and "Ranma's not gay, guys, Ryouta is just The One Exception, promise" really turned me off now. I'm so glad we got past this phase.

(Fun fact: I backbutton out of basically every Sentinel fanfic that I used to love to read just a decade ago for this very same reason.)

I wish I had gotten into the Ranma fandom when it was at its height. I've always hear that it was a lot of fun.

Pirates of the Caribbean, because Sparrington. I was so hoping when the fifth movie was announced (and Jack Davenport was listed on the cast, very briefly) that it would mean a resurgence, but alas, my hopes were dashed.

Also, Fast and The Furious. I know the movies are still being made, but I really only like fic set around the first one, before it got all complicated and less homoerotic.

Ah! I enjoyed Sparrington myself! But the fifth movie is still not out, no? There's still hope!

Dang, yes to Fast and the Furious. It never seemed huge but there were some amazing writers in it.

SGA

[personal profile] randomdrops 2017-04-16 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, not really since I totally burned out on that show and left with a hatred that rivaled my earlier love, but I miss the feeling of that fandom. It was just so fun and, for being as huge as it was, felt small and inclusive and just like a big ol' party. (Until towards the end when both the show and the fandom fell apart and the wank outweighed the fun.)

Gundam Wing. What a shitshow of a fandom and I loved it (granted, I was like 14 at the time).

Harry Potter and Legend of the Seeker. Potter was my first fandom. Seeker was a small but very active fandom for a while there. Had a landcom and several pretty active livejournal communities. I miss both, in different ways.

Highlander. It was my first real online fandom. I still remember scouring the Internet (and webrings!) for new fansites/fic and spending hours in chatrooms/on one of the big HL bulletin boards.

Shark fandom was never huge to begin with (I think that at its peak there were maybe 30 of us, tops), but we had our own fic archive and RP group, and for the most part we all got along really well, and a few of us managed to stay in regular contact for a long time after the show ended before finally drifting apart and losing touch. I probably wrote more fic for that show than any other fandom I've ever been in, and in fact it's what got me writing again after a long absence. I had a lot of fun in that fandom and I still get nostalgic for it sometimes.

Also, Jem fandom. I had a blast RPing Stormer in that one group I was in back in 04-05, until that asshole playing Techrat (who was a proto-MRA edgelord) decided without discussing it with anyone else that he wanted to make the game "grittier" by having his character be a rapey, homophobic creep. Then, when the rest of us got on his case about it, he openly bitched in his LJ about how we womenfolk didn't appreciate how he was making the game more interesting by playing Techrat as a dark and edgy sociopath and said that Voldemort was probably the scariest villain any of us ladies had ever read about and our dainty minds just couldn't handle the raw intensity of his character. Nevermind that the point of that RP was to have fun with wacky 80s girl-band hijinks and femmeslash fluff. But I digress. Everyone else in that group and section of fandom was awesome, and I'm still friends with a few of them and miss the rest. But man, fuck that guy.
