(Anonymous) 2017-05-01 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)but like. that's an actual reason that dudes give for killing trans women: because they were attracted to them and then they found out they were a dude (in the minds of the murderer). that seems like exactly the kind of idea that you should want to muster up outrage against if you're worried about transphobia. I agree that 4chan uses it in a much lighter way, but this is a really weird defense of the term

(Anonymous) 2017-05-01 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)and honestly, I'm mostly familiar with "trap" being used as a kink, particularly for guys (or fujoshi) looking specifically for art of feminine looking guys - so largely queer people. I'm not saying the word has any dignity, and I am absolutely sure some people on the internet use it in a transphobic setting, but if the word doesn't inherently mean that and if it's used regularly without that connotation - and isn't supposed to refer to actual transgender people at all - then it doesn't strike me as all that outrageous.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-02 12:00 am (UTC)(link)More generally, I think you do have to come to terms with the fact that - at the very least - while the concept of a trap is unrelated to the reality of being trans, it's basically identical to the way that bigots understand trans-ness. Basically any application of it to real life instantly brings along a tremendous weight of transphobic bigotry. At the very least, any usage of it outside the specific context of kink is definitely offensive, and I think the word has reached a point where it shouldn't be used at all.
