It was originally written as a horror movie, and pretty much the only thing they changed was to give it the Happily Ever After ending. It would be like if Misery ended with Paul and Annie getting married, because she only hurt him because she loved him so much, and after all, she was his biggest fan.

From what I've read the writer of the screenplay saying, no, it wasn't. There was originally a scene where JLaw's character explained clearly to Pratt's that what he'd done was Not Ok, and nothing could excuse it, but given that it *had* happened she wanted to move on and she really did have feelings for him now. It was cut from the finished film.
