You and every single other writer on this site who apparently thinks a kudos is a goddamn slap in the face or something

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's not that kudos are a slap in the face, they just don't tell writers much of anything other than the reader liked the story enough to press a button. There's no feedback as to what part of the story made the reader laugh, cry or groan with secondhand embarrassment. There's no specific impetus to write more, because there's no way to tell what story elements resonate enough to need continuation.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Some comments do that. But I don't see how someone leaving a comment that just says "Loved the fic! thanks so much for writing" really gives you that information.

lol haha you have to reach pretty far to get "kudos are a slap in the face" from "I love kudos"

It seems to me all they were saying was: kudos are good, comments are better. Which to be honest seems extremely typical. Like I'm not even sure why it's a secret. I almost never post fic but I have enjoyed getting comments for the few that I have. It's, well, just a lot more than a kudos. It makes sense to like them more.

"I love kudos but" = kudos are a slap in the face

Uh, okay...

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
good for you, so are most fanfic authors.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Don't we all, OP. Don't we all.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
For me it really depends on the comment.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
ditto.

Perhaps there are shit authors who get their fur up over "inferior" comments, but any comments I get are absolutely appreciated.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
+1

I do appreciate the kudos/bookmarks (or, on FF.net, the follows and favorites), too, though. Just knowing somebody took the time to read something I wrote and show their support for it in general makes me happy :).

I can't say I prefer one over the other. Like I very much appreciate anyone who takes the time to comment, but I really enjoy getting mail that tells me I've got kudos as well. They both give me a sense of satisfaction.

But I'm also pretty shy sometimes so for me kudos is great because it lets me know someone enjoyed what I did without me going through the worry of responding and not sounding like an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm trying to leave more comments lately, but I have to say it's not going great? I'm not giving up or anything, just...well...it seems like my comments come down to "I really enjoyed this, thanks!" or something. And the fic already has a ton of comments, and the author only replies to the REALLY GOOD ones...and I know mine aren't that good...but it feels really awkward I guess, once again even in commenting I'm not quite good enough for a fandom. :(

+1

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I comment if I have an actual comment or *really* loved a fic but otherwise it's a kudos for anything I like

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I rarely get replies to my comments and it doesn't bother me. My previous fandom was mostly dead before I even got into it, I just figured people would like to get a nice note about their story, and I think that's helped me get more into commenting on new stuff.

I think some writers find it hard to find something to say in response to just "Thanks, I really enjoyed this!". Just imagine you're brightening their day.

I reply to all comments

I must admit I side eye authors who don't reply at all, or pick and choose.

(having said that, I remember a while ago there were anons going around on tumblr accusing authors of inflating their comment numbers by replying!)

I don't usually reply to comments on older fic, especially if I don't have much to say and/or I'm busy, which, grad school, is almost always. But even a little 'I really enjoyed this!' on three-years-ago yuletide fic can make me smile.

Kudos...intellectually, I appreciate them, especially because lots of people sort by them, but it just flat doesn't push the happy button in my head the same way. *shrug*

I leave kudos when I don't have the spoons for comments too, I'm judging nobody.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I am so behind on my comments.

Sometimes if I really love a story, it can be nerve wracking. I'm a bit insecure about my reading comprehension. It's hard to strike a balance between being totally generic ("great story!") and explaining my favourite parts of their own story to them, probably ineptly. I worry that when someone says "I love comments" they really mean they love the 3 paragraph comments from their writer friends, whether they're aware of it or not. I'm not a writer, you know?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
The three-paragraph comments from writer friends are, of course, exciting because there is a lot of feedback/discussion. But when I'm leaving comments, I do sometimes worry that I'm not able to express why I loved something, so if I can't put it into words, sometimes I say that - that the story touched me, made me happy/sad, and sometimes I just highlight my favourite lines.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I will say though, I much prefer a kudo to just "You made a typo"

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Kudos doesn't have a singular.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
I wish replies by the author didn't add to the comment count.

I also wish there was some sort of non-comment system to go "hey I noticed these typos"

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
PMs are good. Or emails to contact addresses.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
On the rare occasion that I post to Ao3, I don't even bother checking for comments or kudos. So maybe I'm a rude writer.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the e-mail notifications for those were automatic? You must have them turned off. Not exactly rude... just... not politic?
