(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 01:53 am (UTC)(link)People who are less secure or afraid to cause fandom waves because fandom is full of bullies, will stick to safely shipping pairings that won't get them into trouble for attempting to go outside the safe zine as designated by fandom.
Meanwhile bullies will complain about Whitecock ships when they were responsible for intimidating people out of shipping them in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:31 am (UTC)(link)This just reads like you justifying your whitecock ships to be honest.
There is not this huge wave of bullies waiting to come crucify you for writing PoC and this sounds more like a line that people tell themselves so they can feel like they're a victim. "I HAVE to ship all these white dicks, people will verbally rebuke me if I dare even LOOK at a dick that's darker than an albino in a blizzard! It's NOT MY FAULT."
Like, look, I don't do around harassing individuals for shipping a specific whitecock pairing because I'm not an asshole (guess what, I even ship some whitecock pairings myself!). But like the AYRT I'm not going to stop talking about the prevalent racism in fandom, passive and otherwise, just because it makes some fellow white people feel guilty for only shipping whitecock. Like it or not, society tells us what to find attractive:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/09/09/no-blacks-is-not-a-sexual-preference-it-s-racism
It's more than a coincidence, it's more than "personal preferences", it's more than "media isn't diverse enough", it's more than that. Fandom is not immune to society's racism.
I have more faith in fandoms than that though. We're often a diverse group of people who embrace a lot of offbeat things. Fandoms can handle talking about how race affects people's fandom preferences.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:47 am (UTC)(link)Depending on your fandom, this is demonstrably not true. In Star Wars, if you don't ship Stormpilot the correct way, even (i.e. you'd better not give Finn a big cock or you're a racist who fetishizes BBC, you'd better not have Finn topping or you're a racist who thinks all black men are inherently aggressive, you'd better not have Poe topping or you're a racist who thinks black men belong in subservient roles, etc.), there's is absolutely, 100% a wave of bullies who will come in and crucify you.
I'm not kidding about this, or even exaggerating. It's happened to several of my friends, and several of theirs, and so on down the line. It's driven away a huge chunk of the pairing's fanbase. This is not uncommon behavior.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 04:03 am (UTC)(link)That beings said, I don't think that should stop ppl from shipping Poc pairings (even if the harassment can be hard to take.) Simply because those smug bastards shouldn't get the satisfaction.
(Racism should always be addressed, those that use it to bully others are pretty easy to spot and ignore. There are plenty of rational ppl to have open and honest dialogue with.)

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 04:13 am (UTC)(link)I have no clue what's going on with Star Wars fandom because I'm not in it, so I'm afraid I really can't comment one way or another on that.
However, while some of the above isn't right, I get the complaints about BBC. It's a dehumanizing fetish that is demonstrably not true. I recently read a study about the "science" behind penis measuring and it pointed out that in all the countries where men had the biggest penis size, it was self reported. The results changed as soon as the data was collected in person by measuring and black men were not shown to be larger.
(https://www.reddit.com/r/sex/comments/666ytk/can_i_vent_for_a_second_about_the_bbc_myth/dggx663/ This Reddit comment mentions the studies.)
So I get it. Like it or not, the whole BBC myth is borne from racism so I can see why people are wary.
Also regarding the whole topping thing, it's fucked up to say Finn can't top, but I personally would caution people about attaching notions of dominance or sexual position because of Finn's race. I know plenty of black bottoms and vers guys as a queer man.
And finally...I guess I would say how big of a problem is this? Because if anything this seems to be more the issue with the Star Wars fandom as a fandom itself rather than there being this general fandom-wide phenomenon of people who police how you write/draw/ship something. I've been in a bunch of fandoms where I shipped interracial couples and I've never had one complaint. I just wrote my smut fics and life went on as normal.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 04:18 am (UTC)(link)What I mean by "problem with Star Wars" is that the fandom itself seems kind of...batshit insane,no offense. Between the Space Nazis being a huge juggernaut pairing to the het incest pairing of Kylo/Rey being a huge juggernaut pairing, and ALLLLLL of the wank that goes along with those to, part of me feels like the Finn/Poe thing is more just wankers finding reasons to wank because it's a huge fandom with a ton of people in it and it has a LOT of drama.
I'm sure it happens sometimes in other fandoms, but I don't think there's a huge wave of people who do it. And even if there were, I still don't believe that means we just sit back and shut up about the passive racism (and sometimes not-so-passive racism) that's prevalent in fandom spaces.
I sympathize with people who get caught up in a witch hunt though. That's never right, and I cannot stand people who do that. If things are going to change there has to be an open dialogue with people, not a tarring and feathering.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 04:19 am (UTC)(link)It was a load of bollocks, of course, but I witnessed a disheartening number of otherwise sensible people take this as a reasonable position. Or, they were too insecure to buck louder and more strident voices.
Some of them quit writing. Others decided it was safer to color inside the lines, as it were. It was all a bit sad, really.
No doubt many of those people are still coloring within proscribed lines, if they're still active in fandom. Because fandom is full of easily cowed and neurotic people seeking approval.
