The Gift Horse.

It is a movie about a busted up old ship set in WW2 and its busted up crew of malcontents, screw ups, and total newbs, who onto cripple the Nazi U-Boat threat by crashing into things.

Loosely based on the Saint-Nazaire raid.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. I'm pretty sure it has a solid cult following though, but it's still fairly obscure. Or it was when I watched it way back when. Also Nathan Barley. Both of these I'd highly recommend for fans of weird Brit comedy like Black Books and Father Ted and The Mighty Boosh.

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is fucking brilliant but I have no idea how well-known it actually is

It definitely *deserves* t be well known

I'm now totally confused as to whether I would like this or not because I love Father Ted but the Mighty Boosh puts me to sleep.

Roswell Conspiracies was pretty cool. I loved how it questioned the basic morality behind defending the world from aliens, with the protagonist as the one who wanted to actually negotiate instead of just killing or imprisoning aliens. I also have a deep fondness for Sh'lainn Blaze, a technology-hating alien working for a tech-loving anti-alien organization because she has nowhere else to go.

I'm not sure how obscure mine really are.

Dark Passage is one of the Bogie and Bacall movies but one that I never seem to hear about.

A Letter to Three Wives has some big names behind it but I don't hear anything about it either.

The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes is probably the most obscure one I'm going to come up with.

Home Before Dark is one that I'd love to hear thoughts from other people on.

Brother Orchid seems to have been mostly forgotten and I'm waiting for it to show up on TCM again sometime so I can record it this time.

The Honey Pot is in the same category as A Letter to Three Wives (same director too) so I don't know how obscure it really is

Journeyman. It's got time travel, brothers (Kevin McKidd and Reed Diamond) at odds, awesome women (Moon Bloodgood and Gretchen Egolf - plus some talented women on staff), it avoids the angsty love triangle it so easily could have fallen into and is just my favorite show ever. And hardly anybody watched it, it's not streaming anywhere anymore, and it didn't get a US DVD release. BUT the UK DVDs will play through VLC just fine.

I've got full episode reviews/recaps here: https://theleisuretimeblog.wordpress.com/long-haul-index/

And a review of the DVD retrospective here:

I think Journeyman was on hulu at some point, because I watched it that way and enjoyed it because it was recommended. More people should have watched it!

I loved Journeyman! Such a shame it didn't get longer than it did - I really wanted to know where it was going.

Now I have to try and work out if I managed to get the DVDs in the end or not! (Probably did, but finding them could be interesting!)

The Lost Canvas anime. Far and away my favorite in the Saint Seiya franchise.

Eleventh Hour (US)
Special Unit 2
Level 9
The Magician
Roar
Cleopatra 2525
The Others

I'm sure others watched them but I feel alone in remembering them.

Kings with Ian McShane and young Sebastian Stan! It aired on NBC and luckily got released on DVD so I can rewatch it all the time. It was a good political intrigue show about kingdoms in the modern world and a war but I wish it had been given more of a chance.

Believe which aired on NBC I think spring/summer 2014? There were only 12 episodes, but I liked the story about kid with powers and her dad who finds out he is her father after helping her escape from the government. Not sure where you can find it.

Awake starring Jason Isaacs and also aired on NBC but was available on Netflix (not sure if it still is). He's in a car crash with his son and wife and in one storyline, his wife lives and in the other his son lives and he switches between the two every time he falls asleep.

Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years

This was in the mid-90s. It seemed to be either a sequel to a made-for-TV movie or a pilot which the channel never re-ran. I'd read Lonesome Dove and had seen the movies, and this show followed Newt Call in his life as an outlaw in a mining town, but it dwelled on the fallout of some events that appeared only in the opening credits.

I loved it because it was grim as fuck. Newt had been married to a young woman (Mary?) who had died in a fire. Her brother Austin was the town's sheriff, and he blamed Newt for his sister's death. Mary's father had been the editor of the town newspaper, but since her death had turned into a shiftless drunk. The nearby mine had been bought by Clay Mosby, a rich businessman/veteran of the Confederate Army who was charming and smarmy (played by Eric McCormack, pre-"Will and Grace") and had Big Plans for the town which all the locals hated. A young woman named Mattie drifted into town and was prickly and asocial as hell, but there was some romantic tension between her and Newt (and Clay Mosby, although that could have been wishful thinking on my part, because he was my favorite).

It ran for one or two seasons on some obscure cable channel I found at the end of the channel range in our cable package and never appeared in TV Guide, and it would re-run every so often but I never knew when, so I don't know if I saw all the episodes. None of my friends had seen it and didn't have any interest when I told them about it, so it felt like a secret TV show only I knew about.

It probably wasn't very good, but I love Westerns and loved Lonesome Dove, so it was right up my alley.

E: OMG, it's on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHwxa4osd08

Tomfoolery and the Curiosity Shop, two 70's kids' shows I was absolutely OBSESSED with as a kid and NO ONE but me remembers them. I could only find one 10 minute clip from the former and part of the opening credits from the latter on youtube and they are completely unavailable on DVD or any other form of video.

Oh, a ton.

I wouldn't call Wallander obscure, exactly, but it doesn't seem to have been widely popular either. It's really good - an excellent palate cleanser if you've seen too many American law enforcement procedurals and find them unsubtle, pat, and cloying.

Last Night is an indie Canadian film about the last night before the end of the world, written, directed, and starred in by Don McKellar. The trailer makes it look terrible, but I loved it and thought it was nearly perfect.
