Yes! I could watch it, well, forever. It was the easiest, nicest show on tv and I don't understand why it was cancelled. Couldn't we have an alternative to all the stressful, aggressive and dark shows there's already too many of?

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! It was just ... so comforting. LOL.

I liked Forever, too.

Not as much as you, but it was a fair procedural and seasonal arc was interesting.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a great show!

I wish it had gotten even just ONE more season. I loved Henry and Abe's relationship so much.

Oh, me too! They were so wonderful together. "Pops" :))

I really enjoyed it and miss watching it. I wish it could have had another season.

I miss it too. It was a good show, with great character interactions.

That being said, after the finale and hearing what Matt Miller had planned for future seasons, I can't help but be a little relieved that it didn't come to fruition. There's a good chance I'd have lost interest very quickly, regardless of Ioan being in it.

Ooooh, what was supposed to happen?

[identity profile] ioanite.livejournal.com 2017-05-27 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's been awhile, but I remember it as follows;

*Despite the ending of the season/show where it looked like Henry was about to tell Jo everything, she would not, in fact, be the first one to find out about his immortality. Lucas, his assistant in the morgue, would be the first. I don't have a problem with that in theory, but given the setup they'd had, I figured the way they'd weasel out of Henry telling the truth would be disappointing.

*There was going to be a new, female immortal introduced, and I got the distinct impression that she would be a love interest for Henry, but might also have something to do with eventually helping Adam out of the predicament he was in at the end of Season One.

*We'd learn that Henry had been married with a family before, which seemed to clash with what we'd seen previously. Somehow, I'd got the impression that while he might have been married before, Abe was his first child.

*We'd learn about the criminal background of Jo's father.

*Above all, while creator Matt Miller never explained why Henry was immortal, he said that Henry would never achieve death, which seemed a little too dark for what we'd been given.

I don't know, all of that, combined with a lackluster finale where Henry suffered no serious consequences for his actions, just made me feel like the show was on the verge of flying off the rails and really descending into cliche. But as my username implies, I have a vested interest in any work that Ioan does, so perhaps I'm a little oversensitive.

Yeah I liked this show :(

The CW app has been promoting it hard as a show that can be watched on their CW Seed app. I've been thinking about getting the app to give it a try. Does it end on a super frustrating cliffhanger (e.g. "Who's been shot?!"/"Who shot..." *enormous explosion!*)?

Also, I feel bad but I can never not laugh in those promos when Ioan Gruffud pops out of morgue cabinet or off a table and says "It's a long story." Because my immediate answer is always "Nah, more like 13 episodes..."

SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR FOREVER'S FINALE

[identity profile] ioanite.livejournal.com 2017-05-27 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
No, it doesn't end on a disappointing cliffhanger. There is a cliffhanger, but it's a very slight one and is a decent enough place to end the show.

My problem with it is that the actions of the main character completely go against what we've seen of him up till that point, and there are NO consequences for his actions. Perhaps those would have been explored had we gotten Season Two, but I have my doubts.

I'm not sure what consequences you're looking for, but Henry acted in self-defence, and it's not like any regular jail cell could hold Adam for his multiple crimes. He could just hang himself and be free. Henry was the only one who had the knowledge and could exact any sort of justice for the murders Adam committed, and it's just a single life sentence. Eventually, he'll die and then be resurrected again to go on more killing sprees. Henry's actions did go against the Hippocratic oath, but also saved a bunch of future lives in the process.

There is a 'cliffhanger', but in all honesty it's more "oh the story continues" and you sort of assume you know what there is at the end. It definitely feels resolved, to the point where it just feels like a 22 episode mini series rather than a definite cancellation.

The user above does not seem to like the finale, which I don't agree with. It isn't perfect, but it is satisfying and leaves you feeling like it's complete but there's a lot of room to theorise for more. I personally don't find it out of character.

I definitely think you should give it a shot.

[identity profile] ioanite.livejournal.com 2017-05-27 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Seeing this just made me realize that I kind of made the show sound not worth watching because I don't like the finale. So allow me to second the sentiment that you should give the show a look. Just because I didn't like the finale doesn't mean you won't, and the rest of it is worth watching in my opinion. Besides, the more "Forever" fans, the better.

Thanks, that's the sort of ending I can get behind.

I enjoyed it a lot. I loved how uptight Henry is, his wonderful relationship with his son, Abe, and the excellent cop character, Jo, played by Alana De La Garza. I didn't like the endless game of him keeping his secret from her but I get it. He has a hell of a lot to fear, as we learn in flashbacks. They definitely do a great job of giving you the scope of his age and experience -- kind of like Highlander, but not as cheesy.

Henry's a bit of a know-it-all but kind of adorable anyway. And I loved his dorky assistant, too; I remember the actor as a very depressed forensic scientist from Bones. He's a little more upbeat as a coroner here.

Abe (played by Judd Hirsch) really makes the show, though. I also really liked Jo's lieutenant, played by Lorraine Toussaint.
