I've been saving for two years to buy new clothes. I desperately need new clothes - I only have two pairs of shoes both with holes.

But my life circumstances are about to change and money is due to get even tighter. So my quandary is this - do I spend the pot of money as I planned or buy only the essentials and make do?

Buy underclothing, socks, shoes, and sleep clothes new. Get everything else from a thrift store or yard sale. There is also local Facebook groups that sell stuff.

Seconding the "new undies, shoes, and sleepwear, seondhand everything else" comment. I grew up like this, still do it, and people often complement me on my clothes. I live in an area that has a lot of college students, so I think a lot of them dump their stuff at Goodwill or wherever. Sometimes if I know how a brand's clothes generally fit me, I will go on ebay and hunt for particular things I can't find at thrift stores.

If you think you can I'd buy new shoes because you may be killing your feet with those things.

Sometimes even when money is tight you still need to bite the bullet and buy something. Essentials are important but you can't avoid clothes shopping forever (I've been avoiding that myself lately but if I get the job I'm applying for I'm definitely getting new clothes.)

I hope the money situation turns around anon.

Thirding this.

I got my best pair of good fitting jeans at a thrift shop. Think of it - several decades worth of clothing available dirt cheap. This means that you'll never have to worry about ill-fitting clothes ever again. Just think of which decade's styles are most flattering to your figure, and research some quality brands every once in a while and you could have a wardrobe that's the screaming envy of your social group.
