FMA

I'm still kind of bitter over the 2003anime vs. manga/Brotherhood wars were, especially coupled with the fact that the fic for the 2003 anime was by and large way better imo and more creative, and longer, and everything post-manga devolved into bullshit about Al going to Xing and sleeping with Ling's concubines and stuff like that.

And all those people who got on their "but the manga/Brotherhood is sooooooooooo superior" horse... who forgot what a fucking classic the 2003 anime was, and how much it contributed to FMA's popularity in the first place, and that a few years before they loved that anime too.

Bullshit.

All of this. I never even got far into the manga/Brotherhood because the wank was so awful. I don't remember if I actually submitted the secret, but years ago I made one about how pissed I was about people turning on the 2003 anime and pretending they never liked it when I know they did. I was right there with them when we gushed over it weekly after the newest episode.

I think I remember something like that (if not yours, then maybe somebody else...), and I totally sympathize.
I was reading the manga way before Brotherhood came out, so there wasn't the same type of debate for me, but I got really annoyed at the fandom and the wank. It was crazy how everybody turned on the 2003 anime.

And btw, that anime still has some stellar animation, and while the plot for Shamballa was stupid, it's a fucking gorgeous movie.

I'm pleased to read this, because I watched the original anime when it came out and was madly in love with it. I started reading the manga but, well, it was long and I couldn't keep up, and I already was less interested in the stuff that was different from in the anime, since I loved the anime's plot from start to finish. By the time Brotherhood came out, it had been awhile since I'd seen the old anime. I tried to watch it, but just... couldn't? Like, I didn't get that far so maybe it's my fault, but the original anime just had this beauty and a certain darker element that just didn't feel there in Brotherhood. But absolutely everyone seems to be nuts for Brotherhood, so I'm glad not everyone in the world thinks it's superior.

Plus, Lust was my favorite, and iirc she dies right away in the manga/Brotherhood.

Lust was great in that anime. In general, all the homunculi characterization was pretty amazing, and the battle between Ed and Greed at the end was so impactful.

I do think there are some things the manga/Brotherhood do better, but at the end of the day, my heart is with the 2003 anime. I think it's more tonally consistent, and really, that's the series that made me love Ed and Al and the world in the first place.
(Also I hated the manga's ending)

I recently watched both back to back and I feel like 2003's had a way stronger intro and gets you to care about the characters way faster and has them reoccur more often. Brotherhood takes basically a adapts two chapters an episode. Lust, especially, was character I cared for more. Brotherhood's conclusion and plot as a whole is more satisfying, but it took me a while to warm up to the characters.

Both definitely have plenty of merits and I have no regrets watching either. Makes me sad to hear that 2003 gets bashed.

I agree with you on the engagement thing, and part of that was because the first anime was more character-driven, I think.

Overall I think Brotherhood was a lot stronger in terms of plot consistency (and plot overall making sense...), but I actually really hated the ending.

I definitely rec for people to watch both (and I go by what their story preferences are in terms of what I suggest they start with)
