Inspired by #4

What movie fandoms were you surprised to see exist at all? Which died quickly, or still remain? Stuff like MCU or Star Wars is obvious.

I'm thinking in the vein of tumblr...two years later and the Fury Road train keeps going.

Reservoir Dogs has lasted a while, but the tumblr fandom was awful last I checked.

I was surprised (but pleased, unlike a secret submitter from yesterday) that The Mummy franchise had such a loyal following. I wish the third movie had been... well, better. I also wish it more movies like it were made, i.e. fun action/adventure stuff that doesn't really take itself too seriously.

I'm amazed at how HUGE the Inception fandom is. Why the hell did that movie make so many people latch onto it? It is a good movie but it isn't like there is anything particularly...fannish about it.

Big cast with popular actors means lots of shipping possibilities, is my guess.

It has a plot which pretends is deep. People love it when they can appear deep and mysterious.

I still have no idea.

I liked the movie well-enough but it never came off as that shippy to me at all, but I got people shipping stuff 'cause fandom's gonna fandom, but how big it was and long it went on for surprised me. That fandom had some impressive staying power.

I'm also confused. I didn't think it was that good - somewhat enjoyable but a little pretentious. Maybe because "dream" media has been done so often, my bar was a bit higher.

Plus, I didn't think anyone in it was that hot, and there wasn't any proper homoerotic tension. I have no idea what the supposed fandom is surviving off of.

I didn't even think it was a good movie.

The fact that the characters aren't especially well developed, I think it was pretty easy for people to latch onto and write the characters however best fit their wants and needs.

At least, I recall that being an argument for the fandom's popularity when I was in it way back when.

I liked Labyrinth as a kid, but I was surprised to see it had such a devoted following.

Re: Inspired by #4

I liked Labyrinth as a teenaged girl, it was very easy to see why it has such a following. Dance, Magic Pants....

Re: Inspired by #4

(Anonymous) 2017-06-08 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be in Labyrinth fandom. :) It was a nice place... very little drama (I don't recall any major incidents of wank), a small handful of decent multi-chap fics, people who shared other non-fandom interests and people were just generally nice. Even the BNFs.

Red Eye. Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy had some great (but obviously weird) chemistry in the movie that spawned a lot of fics.

Wow, I didn't know there was a fandom at all for that movie.

At one point there were a lot of Pimpernel Smith fanfics and fan works, early internet era. Mid 1990s. They've all gone now, though a 1940s film making it all the way to the 1990s has to be pretty cool.

I've always found it interesting that the LOTR/Hobbit movies have their own fandom that is distinct from the book with so much movie-only fanon and shipping and stuff entirely unrelated to the books. And there are times when I can actually get behind that and ship things in the movies that I would never ship in the books.

Disney movie fandoms surprise me with how big they are (and how much of the fandom is adults). So many fics, headcanons, art, and other things. Just surprises me how much.

Again, the Narnia movies (still) have a decent-sized movie-only fandom with things entirely unrelated to the books. Surprises me that it is this active still.

I know I said this here before but I would have liked the Narnia movies to have been closer to the books in most aspects.

Kingsman: The Secret Service surprised me with what a big fandom it became, but I'm so glad it did, even if I'm not in it as often these days.

The way the Now You See Me fandom took shape surprised me.

I'm trying to think of one that I was surprised to see exist at all, and I know I have some, but I can't think of what they are.
