It's not like shows haven't been brought back due to fan demand before. If they don't complain, no one would know there was interest.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Netflix is usually the ones who bring it back.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So?

Also, Netflix hasn't existed since the beginning of time.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it can be brought back as a subpar b-movie which demonstrates why cancellation was the right option after all? That has been done before with a SF property.

This isn't trying to raise interest though. It's whining about how any LGBT shows being canceled MUST be due to bigotry and can't possibly be anything else.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
or maybe people like the show and are sad it's going away

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
That too but they're getting drowned out by rar pride month rar how dare they and etc

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP. My problem is how Sense8 fans are complaining. They act as if it's the only show on Netflix with LGBT representation when Orange is the New Black was doing it years before Sense8. They're also filling any Netflix Facebook post with copypasta complaints and threats. It's absurd and embarrassing.

Maybe they're being too rude about it, or something. But I don't think the existence of OITNB in itself refutes the argument.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
One LGBT show, wow! Homophobia is over!

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
More like several. Lurk more.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But OITNB doesn't feature hunky dudes doing it and orgies (featuring hunky d00ds).

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a realllllly weird criticism of Sense8 fandom

Certainly it doesn't match anyone I know really at all

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
This might explain why people are ignoring all the other Netflix shows with gay characters.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-06-13 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ehh, squeaky wheel. I've seen plenty of discussions that are pragmatic about the cancellation.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Netflix has been pretty upfront and apologetic about the fact that sorry, it's not coming back, not even for a wrap up. I don't think petitions are going to work in this case.

"If they don't complain, no one would know there was interest."

Netflix would know if there was interest in the show by being able to see bunches of stats on who was watching it. The reason for the cancellation is probably because they already know there isn't enough interest in the show.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this not the case for non-Netflix shows?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Nielsen stats are wayyyyyy less exact than Netflix stats

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
More or less, but like the other anon said, Netflix has direct access to a lot more viewing statistics than network shows do. They know who's watching, and when, and how many times, etc. That's why suggesting that they'd need a petition to figure out that people care about a show isn't very accurate.

That's - at best - incomplete. Because viewership in and of itself does not make money for Netflix, subscriptions do. And so you can definitely have situations where enthusiasm is an important consideration - where a smaller number of viewers with very strong feelings might still be significant.

Of course that's not necessarily to say that they should keep Sense8 just for that, I'm sure it was extremely expensive. But it does mean that enthusiasm matters and it makes sense to communicate your enthusiasm to Netflix if you're trying to influence programming decisions going forward.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-12 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really seeing where your point contradicts mine. They know who's watching what. That includes being able to see whether it's a million people are watching the show once per subscription, or a handful of people who watch the show a million times. If it's a case where there's a smaller number of viewers who feel very strongly about the show, well, they already know that because they have direct access to all the demographic information about the people who are using their service. They don't require a petition to tell them that.

Production costs for the show were also pretty high. So a cheaper show might have gotten by with the same audience.

There have been good effective campaigns to bring back cancelled shows before but the kind of shit I've seen on tumblr is NOT IT. Why the fuck would netflix listen to people who have clearly put zero effort into understanding anything. If you're going to call Netflix bigoted and racist please bother to make an actual argument besides "cancelled sense8" and I still don't think that's going to make them want to spend another $9 million an episode.

I love sense8 and I wish they'd shut the fuck up.

Same issue with The Get Down. The show was one of the most expensive ever made (due partly to bad budgeting on Luhrmann's part probably) but Netflix are supposedly the bad guys for canceling it when it truly wasn't popular enough to justify the expense.
