Adult Braces?/ Alternatives?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-13 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone here had braces as an adult? What was your experience? Or did you have invisalign or some similar treatment to treat your issues? Was it worth it in the end? Did your confidence decrease while using them? Did you not give a crap about anyone else? Horror stories? Pleasant stories? I ask many questions.

I'm in my mid twenties and I was thinking of getting braces to fix a crossbite (straightening my teeth is an added bonus -- I just care about the grinding away lol). I'm fairly vain, but I also think I could get over it when I think about the damage I'm doing to my teeth.

So ya'll...care to share? Or even if you had braces as a kid, please share!

I had braces some years ago. It only took about 6 months to straighten the bite, but I'll have to keep the retention wire glued to the back of my teeth for good, so that they won't return to the original position. Worth it, though.

Thanks for responding.

Really? The thought of having the retention wire in for life trips me out. How are you handling it (obviously, you said it was worth it, but still)/ how long have you had for? Does it interfere with eating? Speaking?

I've had it for maybe six(?) years now. It doesn't interfere with eating or speaking at all. Flossing is obviously more difficult, but that's it. At first I kept touching it with my tongue constantly, but after I got used to it I hardly notice it anymore.

It's not the same as you, but I had braces later than most people at my school. I have them in my senior picture. I felt weird about it at first when I was getting them on around the time I knew people who were getting them off, but I stopped thinking about it before too long.

Also, when I was a kid my mom's best friend got braces. She was in her thirties. She didn't seem bothered by it, but you probably don't want to trust my vague memories of my kid judgement.

I trust your kid judgement. Thanks!

If you don't think it'll bother you and you think you can commit to braces and a retainer (and the ways those things make eating annoying) then go for it.

I got braces in highschool, which is still a kid but also when most of my peers had braces coming off so I was slightly self conscious about it. But it was also entirely my choice because I wanted to have less gaps in my teeth and there was no medical reason for it.

Braces were fine, the retainer was annoying and I stopped wearing it way before I should have, but my teeth still look better then they did. I wouldn't say my teeth are perfect now but for that I'd need veneers or something.

Thanks!

I think I can deal with a few years of it. Maybe. The possible pain from not fixing it and possible issues that may arise definitely spur me on. And the retainer isn't so bad, right? I already use a night guard, so I'm guessing it's not too bad.
