My favorite is The Village

Minority view you got there, but I can dig it. I love Ms Bryce Howard.

Didn't he rip off some obscure-ish YA book for the plot of that one?

That's my favourite, too, but Signs is a close second.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-15 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I like The Village too. It's not perfect, but it's pretty decent. I'll never understand why it gets shit on so much. It's honestly not that bad smh.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-15 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see it. From what I've heard, the premise is pretty solid. It's apparently the execution of the second half that dragged it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-15 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine too! I went to see it in the theater with a bunch of friends and we all had quite passionate opinions about it. Ended up discussing it for hours. I suspect the fact that it was marketed as a horror film when it was actually an allegory for the post-9/11 Bush presidency made people hate it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yessss. Even though the 'twist' was obvious (to me), I still love that film. Signs a close second. I don't dislike The Sixth Sense, but I have always been pretty damn 'meh' on Unbreakable.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I was so intothat film until the stupid twist. But I'll still give it props for awesome atmosphere. I just prefer to pretend that the second half never existed.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto. I know his reputation has gone down the pan a bit over the past few years, but I still completely unironically love Signs, and rewatch it regularly. The party reveal scene is iconic.

Nah, it's a favorite of mine too. It had a decent creepy/suspense factor.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-15 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a good one. Definitely the Shymalan film I'm most likely to go to bat for.

Kinda wish it starred someone else, but what can you do.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
"go to bat for" was a pun yes?

The Sixth Sense is one of my fav movies, but Signs is really fantastic and one of the few movies I've watched more than a handful of times.

I honestly think that if it weren't for Mel Gibson being a fucking asshole, and the amazingly stupid and totally necessary "twist", Signs would be widely regarded as a masterpiece. It does SO MANY things right, and nails so many different themes and disparate scenes.

I mean, a pastor who's lost his faith since his wife's death + a brother who never managed to grow out of being the cool 'small town sports hero' + midwest small town creepiness + War of the Worlds + kid actors who don't suck + maybe God is real or maybe not??? If it wasn't for the stupid fucking ending it'd be amazing.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-15 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The ending is perfect for the kind of movie Signs is, but Signs is kind of a lunatic over-the-top unrealistic movie and Hollywood and critics tend not to appreciate that kind of movie

It's my favorite, too! It does both the suspense and the pathos just right.

Not big on his work overall, but I especially disliked Unbreakable, so. . . there's that.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Youtube movie dude Chris Stuckmann did an in-depth analysis of why the movie is Shaymalan's best, it actually made me like/appreciate the movie a lot more because there was a lot to it I hadn't noticed.

I can see why people thought it was the beginning of MNS's downfall and it's a little awkward liking Mel Gibson in anything but I DON'T CARE, if I think about it it's probably the film of his I've watched the most. And the score is gorgeous.

*Spoilers I guess?*

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
No shame. I love this movie, nevermind what M. Night has done since. Aside from the famous party scene, the scenes near the end when they're breaking into the house and Gibson is frantically telling his kids the stories of their births ("they say babies can't smile, but you smiled") fucking gets me every time. I'm a sap.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I love watching family dynamics on screen so I find Signs more worthy of repeat viewing than his previous films. They're all good, though. I'm into The Village, too.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I have nothing to add, but same.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-16 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I practically cheered at the climax, even if it made no sense.

I like Unbreakable more, but Signs is fucking awesome.
