Is there really any need to argue against the segregationist bullshit on the left? Unlike the "child coded" bullshit, I haven't seen white people get doxxed or harassed for writing black characters, so it's not like it needs to be addressed in order to protect people. You can get away with just ignoring people who say this shit.

I think it's kind of unfair to dismiss that as "segregationist bullshit". I don't agree with it entirely, and I think this particular statement of it is definitely not the best, but I think there's a valid point to be made wrt the specific blackness of the characters.

That's not a segregationist thing to say. It would be segregationist to say that white people can't be fans of black characters, but that's not what it's saying, they're saying that you should approach fandom differently.

I don't even necessarily agree with that 100% but it just factually is not a segregationist thing to say. They're clearly criticizing a specific way of doing fandom in a specific context there.

I think it's poorly phrased, and I admit that it can be read as segregationist. But I think in the context of it, what they're pointing to is, don't use Wakanda to tell stories that are fundamentally about and fundamentally center white people. Don't have your white favs in Wakanda and tell the kind of stories you would tell about them elsewhere that are all about them being white favs. And I don't think that's unreasonable or segregationist.

I'm really uncomfortable with this level of policing, and I think it's ultimately counter-productive. Oh, because being called "bae" is fine for white characters, for Latinos, for Japanese characters, for Korean characters.... but not Black! Oh no nono, Black characters are special, unique, different, unlike anything else the world has ever known!

But you know what, let them do it. It'll end up just like Stormpilot. The fandom will die down, because people will feel like they have no freedom to squee without being "problematic", and then these people can all cry about how racist everybody is and how the only reason they dislike their Black people movie is because they're so racist.

Like, you know what, I actually thought Bucky ending up in Wakanda was fascinating, and I'd love to see him being rehabilitated. I like Bucky, and I like T'Challa, so of course I want to see the characters interact....

It reads to me not as, "Please understand that there are very few mainstream black characters for us to identify with." but more, "NO YOU CANNOT LIKE THEM BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT BLACK!" which is... pretty damn segregating.

The way I read it, they're just saying not to use possessive language about black characters, presumably because this person thinks there are different implications to doing that with black characters than with white characters what with the history of possessiveness toward black people.

Which is stupid. This is 2017, not 1866. We don't live in the past. Stuff like this is a reflection of people who (for reasons only known to them) want to erase decades of civil rights advances.

If someone feels they can identify with that character for whatever reason, who gives a shit about their skin color? It's a GOOD thing when people who aren't the same race as a character can find a PoC character relatable enough to be able to identify with them on a personal level.

People fangirl/fanboy over characters like with terms of endearment all the time, so saying you can't use like or use stupid fan terms of endearment just because a character is black is segregationist bullshit.
