Even if we take everything that you say on the right at face value, I still don't see how any of that is actually an argument against the stuff on the left.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because ~SJW~

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's not "your" characters if you do fuck all to support the continued existence of those characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
They're still black characters rooted in black experiences in a film made by Ryan Coogler, though

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I'm not sure though if they are "your" characters even if you do support the comics. Seems like they only belong to the author, or Marvel in general.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You apparently don't realize that when someone says "my" they don't mean it belongs to them, they mean they like it. Like, I say "my band" when I mean "my favorite band" not "the band that I am in."

So if someone would call Black Panther "my bae" it means "I like Black Panther a lot" not "BP belongs to me."

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's the point. I can't take any claims of loving a character oh so much seriously when you don't even bother reading the material they appear in and support it.

Is there really any need to argue against the segregationist bullshit on the left? Unlike the "child coded" bullshit, I haven't seen white people get doxxed or harassed for writing black characters, so it's not like it needs to be addressed in order to protect people. You can get away with just ignoring people who say this shit.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's kind of unfair to dismiss that as "segregationist bullshit". I don't agree with it entirely, and I think this particular statement of it is definitely not the best, but I think there's a valid point to be made wrt the specific blackness of the characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It is what it is. Pro segregation bs. Do not defend it. Do not apologize for it. Shame it.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It is not.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
How is it not? It's literally saying that you should not fangirl over Black characters the same way you do over white ones, and that you should not dare put any white characters in fics about Black Panther etc.
That's pretty segregationist.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's literally saying that you should not fangirl over Black characters the same way you do over white ones

That's not a segregationist thing to say. It would be segregationist to say that white people can't be fans of black characters, but that's not what it's saying, they're saying that you should approach fandom differently.

I don't even necessarily agree with that 100% but it just factually is not a segregationist thing to say. They're clearly criticizing a specific way of doing fandom in a specific context there.

and that you should not dare put any white characters in fics about Black Panther etc.

I think it's poorly phrased, and I admit that it can be read as segregationist. But I think in the context of it, what they're pointing to is, don't use Wakanda to tell stories that are fundamentally about and fundamentally center white people. Don't have your white favs in Wakanda and tell the kind of stories you would tell about them elsewhere that are all about them being white favs. And I don't think that's unreasonable or segregationist.

ayrt

I'm really uncomfortable with this level of policing, and I think it's ultimately counter-productive. Oh, because being called "bae" is fine for white characters, for Latinos, for Japanese characters, for Korean characters.... but not Black! Oh no nono, Black characters are special, unique, different, unlike anything else the world has ever known!
That's bullshit already.

But you know what, let them do it. It'll end up just like Stormpilot. The fandom will die down, because people will feel like they have no freedom to squee without being "problematic", and then these people can all cry about how racist everybody is and how the only reason they dislike their Black people movie is because they're so racist.

Like, you know what, I actually thought Bucky ending up in Wakanda was fascinating, and I'd love to see him being rehabilitated. I like Bucky, and I like T'Challa, so of course I want to see the characters interact....
But oops, silly me, Bucky's a white boy! I'm sorry for liking the already established character.
Welp, that's me bowing out of the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
You're bowing out of the fandom 9 months before it's going to be released because of one secret someone made on fandomsecrets disagreeing with this idea?

lolllllllll

DA.

I've already seen a stupid number of posts like this in the tag already so damn straight I'll keep out of the fandom if this is how it continues. I'll go play in the sandboxes that don't try to tell me how to love a character instead.

NAYRT

But can you explain how, "You cannot like characters that are not of your colour, go play with your own skin tone characters." is NOT segregationist?

It reads to me not as, "Please understand that there are very few mainstream black characters for us to identify with." but more, "NO YOU CANNOT LIKE THEM BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT BLACK!" which is... pretty damn segregating.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-23 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not what it says

The way I read it, they're just saying not to use possessive language about black characters, presumably because this person thinks there are different implications to doing that with black characters than with white characters what with the history of possessiveness toward black people.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Which is stupid. This is 2017, not 1866. We don't live in the past. Stuff like this is a reflection of people who (for reasons only known to them) want to erase decades of civil rights advances.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
If someone feels they can identify with that character for whatever reason, who gives a shit about their skin color? It's a GOOD thing when people who aren't the same race as a character can find a PoC character relatable enough to be able to identify with them on a personal level.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
It literally is. It's saying fans should treat black characters different than how they treat white characters. People fangirl/fanboy over characters like with terms of endearment all the time, so saying you can't use like or use stupid fan terms of endearment just because a character is black is segregationist bullshit. For fucks sake.

How would this be in reverse? Black people can't be fans of white characters or express fondness of those characters in typical fandom behavior ways.

Holy shit. They are just comic book characters. Stop making everything a battleground.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, words have different meanings in different contexts. It's a thing that happens sometimes. I don't know what else to tell you.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone that begins a statement with "dear white people" in that generalising and condescending tone can fuck right off.
