It seems to me that the people on the left are defensive because we don't want the characters a movie full of black people to be treated like shit by MCU fans.

Black Panther and Wakanda are terrible concepts. They are basically an endorsement of every White Power group's fears over black people. We've got a slave trading black power which has the literal cure to cancer but refuses to share and occasionally holds the rest of the world to ransom. In real life it would be subject to the first fully justified global coalition invasion of an African country in history. I'm struggling to see how Black Panther is not a Supervillain-centric movie.

But I will be buying a ticket for the movie and I hope every color of fan goes to support what looks to be not just another great Marvel film but a wonderful celebration of African culture and heritage. I mean...I find it difficult to disagree with the person on the left, at least in some regards, considering I agree with many similar arguments when applied to Wonder Woman and what it means to women, even though I never read or bought a WW comic in my life (it still got my $ - twice, and BP will too). I do take some issues - for example, just because something has special significance for a group doesn't mean it is "for" them and only them (despite whiny protests to the contrary, it turns out men did in fact get to see, enjoy and "claim" WW too, for example). I also take issue with the "all media we create" because I've seen some pretty shitty stuff, so I'll reserve judgment on whether it's the best Marvel movie ever made!

And in conclusion, I think everyone should just stop saying "my bae" and "my son" and "my mom" and whatever in regards to all characters.

At least one inside view of the business is that Marvel Comics's editorial decisions have more to do with their board being dumb as a box of rocks than struggling readership. Fans are just the scapegoat for Marvel's bad marketing and refusal to deal with new distribution models.

1. They're still making decisions on monthly sales even though the market for print periodicals has been going to hell for almost two decades, and brick-and-mortar retail of print is getting chewed up by Amazon.

2. They've ridiculously split their core brands among dozens of titles in a shrinking marketplace.

3. ANOTHER FUCKING CROSSOVER EVENT.

Some people just aren't comics fans, but will see the movies. But sometimes the movies will cause a surge in interest in the comics.

I also have a reply to your letter writer.

Dear Me (and not Black Fans Everywhere),

I'm actually guessing you are in a small minority that feel this exact way. Now, you might have a point about the language, even though fans talk that exact way about all characters they like, there can be an implication of ownership and possessiveness. And I get that the movie has a lot of significance for black fans. But I guarantee you that Marvel wants everybody who is willing to buy a ticket to see this movie. And actually, you do too. Because the more popular it is, the more the industry will see movies with black casts as viable and a good investment. Being exclusionary doesn't help anything. If someone is doing something wrong, by all means call them out, but people including white characters (in fic or whatever) that have interacted with T'Challa (who was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) and/or been to Wakanda is not wrong.

While there's a lot to unpack here, I'm surprised no one's called out that consumer purchases of books do literally nothing to push sales numbers. Because of various pieces of historical baggage in the direct market, sales numbers (outside digital comics) are only reflective of how many books comics stores purchase. Unless you ask a store to preorder a book for you when it's first solicited (which is usually at a point where there's no way to judge whether or not you'd want it outside the names on the book anyway), your purchase contributes zero to its final sales numbers. That's why books reset to #1 so often, and that's why they have so many "for every 10 books a comics store orders they get 1 variant cover" gimmicks.
