While there's a lot to unpack here, I'm surprised no one's called out that consumer purchases of books do literally nothing to push sales numbers. Because of various pieces of historical baggage in the direct market, sales numbers (outside digital comics) are only reflective of how many books comics stores purchase. Unless you ask a store to preorder a book for you when it's first solicited (which is usually at a point where there's no way to judge whether or not you'd want it outside the names on the book anyway), your purchase contributes zero to its final sales numbers. That's why books reset to #1 so often, and that's why they have so many "for every 10 books a comics store orders they get 1 variant cover" gimmicks.

Oh, I forgot to mention in the above: it's preorders only because comic stores aren't allowed to return unsold material to the publisher to be reimbursed the way booksellers are, so they'll only order as much as they expect demand to be from past experience or customer interest so as to avoid having a lot of worthless stock they literally can't do anything with.

I don't think that people pushing the narrative care about the facts even slightly. It's just a good narrative about hypocrisy where actually all the problems in the world are the fault of the people pointing them out.

This.

So liking and identifying with a character with a different skin colour than yourself is a problem now? And that doesn't even sound the tiniest bit like racist rethoric too you?
Yikes.

First, that's not what the part on the left is saying, and you know this.

Second, that's also not what the bit on the right is saying at all. The bit on the right is specifically talking about fans being hypocrites for not buying enough comic books, and is also explicitly what this thread is talking about.

Then what is it saying, then? Do not interact with black characters in the typical fannish way. You must put them on a pedestal and admire them from afar, as you would with an expensive glass doll.

BS. If the fandom is that toxic and policing, I'm more likely to just skip that fandom and the attachmed and give my support to media that I'm actually allowed to engage with. This is why I've had nothing to do with Steven Universe. I took one look at the fandom and went NOPE. And the best part? The publishers will see that and think, WELP guess nobody's interested in media with black characters after all.

Seriously, the letter on the left can go fly a kite.
