Yep. It'd get sporked no matter what, but the fact that Whedon touts himself as a feminist and creator of strong female characters... well. The man gets a lot of hate, but I think in this case the criticism of that script is not unwarranted.

DA

I agree it's bad. I think OP was talking more about the people who go "this script is bad and therefore is proof that everything and anything Whedon has ever done is horrible and nobody should ever enjoy anything ever done by him" which is going a little further than mocking the script though.

And I say this as someone who hasn't enjoyed anything by him.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's proof everything Whedon's ever done is horrible (each work should be judged by their own merits, or lack thereof) but it's not entirely unjustified for people to suggest that the script and Wonder Woman's characterization provides support for some of the criticisms of Whedon in terms of his feminist female characters. But frankly, while there's some hate on FS for Whedon, there's also plenty of anons who seize upon even mild criticism or expressions of dislike for him as "hate", which is really silly.

I don't have any feelings on Whedon the writer but I haven't enjoyed or been very interested in most of his work so I'm neither a fan nor a hater. Just pointing out that rabid anti-Whedon people do exist who will use the WW script as fuel for their fires.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
They should totally not talk about the thing that showed they were right, and totally let the people who insulted them go on doing so.

Whedon fans have been wrong, and need to just learn to sit there and be wrong for a while. Quit trying to wriggle out from under this one.

Did you reply to the wrong comment? I don't know what this response has to do with me, unless you're either implying I'm a secret Whedon fan in disguise, or only two types of people exist to you, people who love Whedon or people who hate him.

Mostly I don't care about him. He and the themes he writes about don't interest me.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, absolutely. But the quality of the script makes it excellent fuel, so I can't really summon up much outrage for "anti-Whedonites will use the awful, sexist script he wrote to support their argument that his writing is awful and sexist"!

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I'm not all that outraged either. I can get why OP might be annoyed by vitriolic anti-Anyones though, purely due to vitriolic anti-Anyones tending to not be very pleasant even when their targets deserve it. Plus they have a bad tendency to start targeting anyone who likes works by the problematic person in question. You can see an example of that happening in the thread above this one and I don't even like Whedon.

Not all of Whedon's stuff is bad. In fact, I liked Firefly and Titan A.E.; it's that for some reason the script he wrote for WW seems to hit every stupid faux-feminist cliche pothole on the way. Like yes, WW is badass in it? But it's set up so she's badass for the male gaze, not inherently badass because she's that good.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying it's bad, I said I didn't enjoy it.

I'm just pointing out that the people that OP is talking about do exist, who are using the WW script as "proof" that everything Whedon has ever done sucks. Which is going overboard, even if this particular script in question is, like I said, bad. Which it is.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Firefly was the worst. Whedon was always being bitchy that Lucasfilm wouldn't let him do a Han Solo movie and tried to prove he could and just proved he couldn't when it got cancelled.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What does "badass for the male gaze" even mean?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It means a woman whose fight scenes are only an excuse to show off her figure. It is a common theme in Whedon's works. It is trying to excuse softcore by pretending it is action girl feminism.

I think it means that instead of being a badass in a way that women can look up to, Wedon's WW is badass in way that men can get off to.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My guess? Tight clothing, cleavage, camera shots that pan slowly over boobs/butt/legs, etc. in a way that's not done with men during fight scenes.

Or in the case of WW, distracting the villain with a sexy dance. Can't remember the last time Batman had to do that, unless you count the Batusi!

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I would pay good money to see that.

Peter Quill in the first GotG?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-24 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's when the badass female character's design is based primarily on being attractive straight guys.

It's written "sexy slow pan" up Diana's body in Whedon's script.

It's every video game where the female hero gets to wear armor that covers his vital areas, but the female hero is stuck wearing a chainmail bikini.

It's Lara Croft with her improbable breasts and impractical outfits.

It's every movie "tough chick" who wears black leather so tight that if they were actually in a fight, they wouldn't be able to move well enough to kick the bad guy in the jewels, much less the face.

It's River Tam. Just ... River Tam.
