I usually find it preachy when characters talk religion (e.g., Steve Rogers’ pompous line about there only being only one God). But I admit I’m enjoying Matt Murdock’s talks with Father Lantom and Matt’s struggles with his faith vs. his vigilantism. It makes the story more real. Matt believes killing will damn him. I don’t personally believe in God, but if the Ten Commandments are working for him, awesome. And how often do we see superheros having deep talks with counselors? Modeling good emotional practices! omg.

Plus, Catholic boys are so so hot.

Yes, you do!

I mean. He totally kills people. The damage he inflicts couldn't NOT kill people. And it's been a while since I watched, but does he confess to killing people? Or is he conflicted because he thinks he's not permanently putting bad guys out of commission?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He's only killed Nobu, as far as the TV show's concerned, and that was in self-defense. He tries to kill Fisk and that's his big crisis of faith. But he fails and Father Lantom asks him if he's glad.

As far as putting guys in comas go, I guess that's not covered by the Commandments.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think that he's splitting hairs as all lawyers do: he's not intending to kill anyone and avoids methods that are definitely fatal, so at worst it's manslaughter. Anyone else might argue with that!

Daredevil did it right. Most of the time a character is X religion, it gets mentioned like once ('I don't celebrate X-mas') but Matt is actually contemplating his actions within the framework of his religion.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. If a character takes their faith seriously/it's important to them, then I think it's important to have the character reflect on their actions within that context and their own personalities.

Which is probably why it doesn't seem preachy - it's an exploration of something that's actually part of the character's life, not something tacked on for one reason or another.

I agree, i don't like religion in shows or movies *at all*, because it is almost 99% blech and yes, preachy.

But funny you use Steve Roger's throw-away line, because that was pure snark. You don't see him do or say one other thing that's *remotely* religious in any of his movies other than that.

So it really didn't bug me.

I don't know if it was snark as much as throwing evangelicals a bone, and telling them it was okay to enjoy it cause the Asgardians are not "real" gods.

I got that impression, too. That Marvel is trying to portray the Asgardians' divinity as being powered through some kind of science instead of being, well, divine. Because blasphemy! Whatever. Dissing Norse religion is pretty cheap, I think, if you're going to be relying on it to populate your comics/movies. Clarke's law aside.

Who knows. I didn't take it seriously, though, and Steve really doesn't seem to have much in the way of religion, so.....

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I notice people tend to excuse Steve's behavior even if it's the tiniest thing. It's not necessary. He doesn't need absolute purity of soul to be awesome.

I think it was a fatuous, small-minded comment. There are other religions in the world, you know? Not just Norse gods. He can have a bit of bigotry. It would be surprising if he didn't. He's human.

Also, he's allowed to be a little thrown to discover the existence of actual gods that aren't his Christian God.

Well that has been mentioned in the movies, in the comics (which I know is not always on the same page) there have been a few mentions of his religion and it's hard to see him as something other than protestant.

I loved Steve's line.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was a cheap shot. And uptight and intolerant. It was a bad first impression.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved Steve's line too. I would have found it preachy or sanctimonious if he'd felt the need to drive it home with an entire speech or pound away at it over and over by bringing it up every time any of the Asgardians were mentioned but it was just one line he said in response to being told to stay out of things with the implication that a mere mortal shouldn't take on a 'god' that I found very fitting for an Irish American kid from the 1940s.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm loving Matt Murdock's constant crises of faith. They're always interesting to watch/listen to & I really hate preachy/religious stuff, so I think they're doing it 100% correctly.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Tbf to Steve that was whedon mischaracterizing him as a self-important jerkwad because he's too lazy to do basic research.

Matt's a self-admitted terrible catholic. It's interesting the first few run arounds but once he keeps killing his villains and angsting about it, it gets old real fast.

I much prefer Cap from the comics in general.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Cap in the MCU will always be that fuckawful smug line about 'the safest hands are our own' to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ack, yes.
