The new Sherlock Holmes movies are kinda steampunkish, there's also The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and uhh, not sure if Prestige counts? If you're OK with games I think I could give you more titles!

For books, go with anything Julio Verne! As for films, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Vidocq, Nausicäa (and some others by Studio Ghibli), Hellboy definitely has some steampunk elements...

Also I just need to rec them because I just discovered them and fell in love.- a band called Steam Powered Giraffe. The whole idea behind their show being that they are military robots from the 1800s who survived the war and are left to ponder on life and love.

Will come back if I can think of more!

Seconding Steam Powered Giraffe. Also Abney Park was another popular steampunk band back at the height of the genre.

Also seconding Jules Verne because hell yes. Some of HG Wells' stuff is also great, but he goes less for the adventure and more for the story, so the "visuals" might not be as detailed, though a fanwork of his Time Machine, "Morlock Night" was arguably what started off the steampunk genre.

If you're interested in steampunk webcomics as well, then I cannot possibly rec Girl Genius enough.

DA

+ one kajillion

You will either love or hate the art style, but plot wise, it's brilliant.

The tv show The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne! At one point the whole thing (well, the abridged US version anyway) was up on youtube, it might still be.

Wild, Wild, West and Going Postal are two pretty funny steampunk comedies.

The 12 Monkeys TV show has some elements of steampunk to it, in my opinion, and it's one of the best time travel shows I've seen as far as maintaining continuity, and it has really lovable characters (to me, anyway).

Legend of Korra was more Dieselpunk...a lot of people get Steampunk and Dieselpunk confused.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-01 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Can you explain the difference, please'

Assuming petrol-powered early industrial devices instead of steam-powered ones?

Roughly...

Steampunk = Victorian/Edwardian

Dieselpunk = WW1 through WW2

Atompunk comes after, etc etc etc; see also: Candlepunk, Clockpunk, Solarpunk, more

I highly recommend Gail Carriger's books - all of them. Very funny, very steampunk.

Unfortunately, I read more steampunk than I see, but maybe a Google search will net you something good to watch?

If you're on Tumblr, http://steampunktendencies.tumblr.com/ has some great visuals - some artwork, some sculpture, a lot of cosplay. They're also on Facebook & have a standalone site.

Carriger's books are funny, but I think they're more Victorian paranormal romance than true steampunk.

Final Fantasy VI is a good steampunk game, though the tech is sort of in the background with the magic in the foreground. It also isn't bound to the usual bronze color scheme that far too many steampunk properties take.

Warehouse 13 is a great steampunk type sci-fi show. And one of my favorites that has been on tv in a LONG time.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-01 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Gosh I love steampunk.

Other people have already recommended League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Wild Wild West, and the new Sherlock Holmes movies, which are always my top picks for the aesthetic, but I'd like to add Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It's not set in the Victorian era, but it's got a lot of similar visual stuff. Also the Steamboy movie by Katsuhiro Otomo.

For books, I highly recommend the Airborn series by Kenneth Oppel, the Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfeld, and Boneshaker by Cherie Priest (which I haven't read yet but I really want to) - they're all YA but most "adult" books haven't really caught on to the fun yet.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-01 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say Boneshaker is an adult book, not YA--the protagonist is the mother of a teenage boy, I think, it's been awhile since I read it.

French movie Les Aventures Extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec is a somewhat steampunkish.

Late to the party but, Avril et le monde truqué too; I'm not sure if it's by the same studio but it's the same graphic style.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-01 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
The Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes films have a steampunk vibe, and so does Victor Frankenstein (also, those three make a killer mix if you're in the mood for a fun movie night). China Meiville (sp?) writes some good steampunk novels too, though they can be a bit hard to get through (definitely worth it) and can screw with your head quite a bit.

Unfortunately there aren't that many steampunk visuals. There's an animated movie called Steamboy I think? But it's largely fiction or just normal costumes. Which is disappointing because Steampunk is the most visually underrepresented form of media to me. It could be so good dammit.

Musically speaking, there's a gear punk centered album called The Cog Is Dead.

Look it up on YouTube, you won't regret it.

P.S.: their song "The Death of the Cog" is hysterical. Listen to that one first if you can.

I forgot about The Cog Is Dead! I love that album.
