In some cases, you just see a fandom and think "I bet this sort of wank will arrive sooner or later" and to absolutely nobody's surprise,that's exactly what happens.

I called that the fandom would be a trainwreck when it was first annouced, not the death threats specifically. My secret was along the lines that I liked main artist behind it but had the feeling the fandom would suck.

ohhh. yes. well, I'm not surprised. the more inclusive a game tries to be, the more toxic the community.

Nobody is in the replies that I can see saying that death threats are good

Most people in the replies seem to be saying that death threats are obviously wrong, but that drawing art of a trans male character as a cis female is also not great.

which, agree or disagree with that argument, it is not the same as saying that they deserved death threats.

There are some, but most of those are not actually in the replies of the developer tweet but in several other tweet threads.

Just imagine teh reaction if the artist kept him in his male version. Then the death threats would be about "YOU BELIEVE HE'S A WOMAN AND NOT A MAN BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT HIM!".

It's not the same issue. Even if you disagree with the argument, saying that it's wrong to draw a trans male character as a trans female character is not the same as justifying death threats. They're different things. So saying that people were justifying death threats when they weren't is a misrepresentation. Maybe they were actually justifying death threats somewhere else, I don't know, but don't post a thread here and say "oh people are justifying death threats" when they're very clearly doing nothing of the kind. What they're doing might be wrong but it's not what the person said they were doing.

There's plenty of "I don't condone death threats BUT" in there, which is basically the same thing as somebody saying "I'm not racist BUT" - everything that follows after the but means you are exactly what you just claimed you're not.
I'm pretty sure there have been quite a few tweets that are deleted now because I know I saw some very gross ones justifying the threats that are not there anymore.

I was expecting Doctor Who wank the minute they announced the next Doctor. And I was not disappointed in the slightest. All of five minutes later there was wank on Facebook.

^This. I saw the casting announcement, went to make some popcorn, and sat back and enjoyed the whiny drama on FB. It was great.

I know a dude irl who is so, so against it and my bf(who is a big Who fan) is like 'dude it's just a TV show, chill' like it's fine if he doesn't care for it, it's just how much it bothers him which is really OTT tbh.

He's acting like the show has ended and everything has been ruined when there hasn't even been an episode yet.

(Like I have no horse in this race because I don't watch Dr.Who but like, maybe wait and see?).

My reaction was exactly the same. It was clearly going to be the perfect storm of butthurt "what about the menz" and the general wankiness of Doctor Who fandom.

From what I've heard, people have been "quitting Doctor Who forever" over every new doctor since Peter Davison.

Gal Gadot's casting as Wonder Woman. I didn't know the Israeli stuff at that point, but I knew, given a good segment of the fans wish list, and Gadot's body type, that things were going to get heated fast.

The Israeli stuff was just putting propane on a grease fire.

JFC, fandom sucks.

Well I knew there would be wank about race over Death Note on Netflix but that's kind of shooting fish in a barrel as far as predictions go.

I actually feel like the whitewashing complaints have been tame compared to other times stuff like this has happened (like Ghost in the Shell.)

I've seen more people just complain that it looks generally bad and a lot of complaints on Light outside of his whiteness is how they don't think he's good looking enough.

Less than a week before the fandom turned into a dumpster fire, that's a new record for fandom suck I think.

it didn't "turn into a dumpster fire." that's a ridiculous representation of what's going on. bad faith.
