Re: Teach me about makeup?

If you're using BB Cream - I only use the Korean ones; I find that the American ones don't really give coverage.
For eyeliner, I'm not picky about brands per se, but I am picky about lastingness, and most cheap ones just don't stay on long enough for me. But my favored eyeliner pencil brand isn't readily accessible, and you may not have the problems (oily skin+deep sunk eyes) that make most eyeliners just melt away within an hour on my face.

The real question is, in what way do you want to improve your makeup game? What look do you want to achieve?

I never bother with eyeliner. but I have super thick lashes, so I think I naturally look like eyeliner is supposed to make you look. The few times I've tried eyeliner, I've ended up poking my eye, and the results don't look different enough from my normal look to make it worth it.

Clearly you're using the wrong eyeliner :P I have jewel tones! Bright blues, greens, gold, purple, I even have a great orange. Do what you want! Break the rules!

Though also, I've found it way easier to use pencil eyeliners than liquid. Liquid ones are finicky and poky. Pencils can just be drawn on with a lot less hassle, I find.

Damn, that's fantastic. I've blended before but never into a rainbow. *goes to practice*

I just woke up one day and realized I have enough pencils for the whole thing. My eyes are so deep-sunk that it's not so easy to see it all the time, but it still came out really fun.

Um...that's eye shadow, not eyeliner.

My friend, it is eyeliner pencil. Eyeshadow comes in a flat box and it is a packed powder. An eyeliner pencil is a pencil of eyeliner, and is not powder.
While the two may seem very confusing, after a false start or so you will begin to get the hang of it!

That looks amazing!

What brand eyeliner do you use? (I used to have a set of pencils from Ulta that had a variety of colors, but I damaged them and have been unable to find the same set any time I've been back.)

Anyway, I'm gonna second you on pencil being much easier to apply than liquid eyeliner. I don't fuck with liquid eyeliner. It's such an unnecessary hassle.

Thanks! My favorite is actually an Israeli brand called Il Makiage. I don't think they export... but they're very bright, vivid, and long-lasting, and if you're a member there are discounts all the time, which is nice.
I think that MAC is decent, but they're kind of pricey. The gold on my eye there is Urban Decay, but its lasting power isn't quite what I'd like on my skin. The orange is from a Korean company called Clio, which I think are pretty good for their price range.

And yeah, the liquid liners are a pain and a half. They may look good, but it'll take half an hour to apply... where the pencils can be done in less than a minute. No competition.

Kudos, that looks amazing! Do you have any recommendations for smoky eye effects, as far as both techniques and brands go? Sorry for the random question, but that makeup *really* seems to blend in well, and I have been meaning to do something similar for ages (just combining eyeliner and shadow/mascara).

Thanks! And no worries about the question XD

The truth is, I know jack-all about smokey, because my eyes are too deep sunk for it. If I put eyeshadow on you just don't see it - it vanishes into my eyelid fold. I can draw a damn smiley on my eyelid and you wouldn't see it when my eyes are open. That's why I focus on eye pencils, because those stand out more.
The blending on these is just the pencils themselves - they've got great pigments, so I just run each one a little over the edges of the previous, and it blends like a charm.
So I'm afraid I'm no help to you at all :((((
(I also don't use mascara - I have been gifted with lots of lashes, as you can see)

You are telling me that those are you actual lashes.

Without mascara.

*Oh my.*

Okay, fangirling notwithstanding, it's actually good to know that it works for somebody just using the right kind of pencil. Maybe it's just a matter of finding a good pencil/makeup combo. Thanks for the reply anyway!

Yeah, I don't even own mascara XD I got all of my dad's hair. With the eyelashes and luxurious curls it's great, the thick eyebrows and leg hair - less.

What you want for good blending are the pencils with strong pigment that are on the soft side - just running them over your hand, you should be able to get a nice layer of color. If they're that strong, you should have no problem blending them. Though I will also say, in this case its pencils blended with pencils - I haven't tried "smearing" the pencils to blend, because I want pencils that will be long-lasting.
Good pencils may be a little pricey, but I've found that they're worth the investment for me (especially since I don't use eyeshadows).

If you go to a store that has testers, you can also try blending the pencils and see that it works before getting them. I do actually have *some* eyeshadows, and in the event of blending them with pencil, I usually layer them over the pencil (and sometimes then go back and reinforce the pencil line).

NA

I feel you on this. I have a bit more mobile lid than you do, but my eyes are deep set, not-quite-down-turned, and with a pretty small mobile lid. So eye shadow tends to just look kind of 'meh' on me at best, and murky at worst. A little bit of beige just above the crease is about as much as my eye area can handle, and even then I'm not really sure if it looks better or worse than nothing at all. And eyeliner is always ridiculously finicky, what with making it thin enough that it doesn't swallow my lid whole, and then pulling it up early so that it doesn't drag down my eye.

The last time I did a winged look, I redid it twice until I got it as good as it could get - and then this dude at my local coffee shop told me I looked really tired that day. :(

Meanwhile, sales associates at Sephora are all, "Oh, no, you have GREAT eyes for wearing shadow and liner." NO. PLEASE STOP.

How do you get Korean BB creams in the US?

I liked the BB creams I used in Japan, they definitely had more of a tint to them. That was when I stopped wearing foundation completely, when I found BB cream could do the trick and is presumably better for your skin. But I also found that Japanese makeup usually didn't match my Caucasian skintone very well.

For eyeliner, I only use liquid liner. My eyes are a little deep too, and pencil liners just don't stay on well, I hate rubbing my eyes only to realize I've smeared everything. I use really cheap liquid liner (from Elf? that cheapass brand where you can get shit for like a dollar) and I mean, it does what it's meant to do.

My goal is to have smoother looking skin and not get greasy looking (I have oily skin). I also have very dark circles under my eyes, but though I have a concealer stick it just doesn't look like it matches to me.

Where I'm currently living there is a store that sells Korean cosmetics, so I can get there - I'm lucky that they match my skin tone very naturally, so it looks great, and they have way more tint than any American brand that I've used.

The best liquid liner that I've used is Jade. That stuff stays on like nobody's business. It takes longer to put on, because if I mess up then you need to clean with vaseline or makeup remover, but once it dries you can wash your face with soap and that won't come off. I use it when I really want the eyeliner to stay on.

If you're having issues matching skintone, then it might be best for you to go to a proper makeup store that has the palettes of colors, so you can figure out what matches best. There really is no point using a tint that's not working for you... I have a concealer stick for under my eyes that works like magic, though tbh with BB cream I hardly need it.

There are also some powders you can put that will cut the oiliness (though again, I'm realizing now just how much I use BB cream as a catch-all).
