Teach me about makeup?
(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)Is anyone an advanced-level makeup user here? I'd like to improve my makeup game, but I still want to wear as little as possible. But I'm afraid to just google, because I assume every website relating to beauty products is sponsored content/the result of a corrupt beauty industry and I have no idea who to trust.
What are the nice makeup brands and are they worth it? Things like Sephora (?), Bare Minerals, etc? What are your basic makeup tips, and what does your routine look like? What should one do at minimum if they want to wear light makeup but still look nice? What's okay to buy at the drugstore, what should I invest more money in?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)Whether it's even better to buy $30 eyeliner from a department store or other fancy place is another question. I can't imagine it's so much better that it's worth spending $30 - which is more than I can afford anyway - especially since you aren't supposed to keep eye makeup for too long before replacing it.
Re: Teach me about makeup?
I always spray drugstore brand hairspray on my face after applying makeup to help it stay- a trick I picked up from high school theatre & marching band color guard.
Most of my makeup is drugstore brand, and I think if it works for you, that's perfect. You don't need to spend any more money on makeup than you're comfortable with, especially given your choice to wear light makeup anyway.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)I don't really know if drugstore makeup works for me or not, since I've never used anything else! I don't think my makeup is advanced enough either way. It seems like a liquid liner/mascara doesn't vary much, but my skin tends to be oily and I can be a little red/blotchy at times, so I'd love to find a way to look more smooth and fresh. But honestly, even drugstore makeup is so freaking expensive.
Re: Teach me about makeup?
And, while we're discussing makeup and I'm here, I might as well pimp one of my favorite independent businesses, https://shirocosmetics.com/. I'm obsessed with their eyeshadow. They do a color of the month and every June, they put up the colors from the last 12 months where you can buy them one last time and then only the three best sellers stay in the store. I have God only knows how many eyeshadows from them and two lipsticks, and I have no complaints.

For eyeliner, I'm not picky about brands per se, but I am picky about lastingness, and most cheap ones just don't stay on long enough for me. But my favored eyeliner pencil brand isn't readily accessible, and you may not have the problems (oily skin+deep sunk eyes) that make most eyeliners just melt away within an hour on my face.
The real question is, in what way do you want to improve your makeup game? What look do you want to achieve?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-27 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)I liked the BB creams I used in Japan, they definitely had more of a tint to them. That was when I stopped wearing foundation completely, when I found BB cream could do the trick and is presumably better for your skin. But I also found that Japanese makeup usually didn't match my Caucasian skintone very well.
For eyeliner, I only use liquid liner. My eyes are a little deep too, and pencil liners just don't stay on well, I hate rubbing my eyes only to realize I've smeared everything. I use really cheap liquid liner (from Elf? that cheapass brand where you can get shit for like a dollar) and I mean, it does what it's meant to do.
My goal is to have smoother looking skin and not get greasy looking (I have oily skin). I also have very dark circles under my eyes, but though I have a concealer stick it just doesn't look like it matches to me.

Re: Teach me about makeup?
My biggest tip is to cater your makeup to the weather. Don't wear liquid foundation when its hot. I've made that mistake before. I tend to go for browns in eyeshadow because they make my green eyes stand out, with the occasional color shadow for a special occasion. I don't wear mascara most of the time, but I have thick lashes. For lipstick, subtle is better for non-dress up occasions. I usually go with a light brown (occasionally light pink) that is just dark enough to emphasize my eyes. And I like glosses because they make my lips stay moist more easily and are easy to redo throughout the day. I have dry lips, so I stay away from matte lip colors. I have a couple fun red glosses that I pull out for special occasions (or if I need a pick me up).
I guess, just, pick a feature to emphasize? Either eyes or lips. Don't go dramatic on both.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 01:38 am (UTC)(link)YouTube has a lot of good makeup tutorials. I've learned a lot from pixiwoo.
I like Loreal, MAC, and Too Faced. I get the latter two from Ulta, the former at the drugstore. Revlon lipsticks are fantastic and dirt cheap.
Sometimes the drugstore brands are better than the expensive stuff, and sometimes vice versa, and there's really no rhyme or reason to it.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 02:41 am (UTC)(link)Re: Teach me about makeup?
(Anonymous) 2017-07-28 11:09 am (UTC)(link)~ Use makeup brushes, especially for applying eye shadow, concealer (particularly to blemishes), foundation, blush, bronzer/contour, and highlight.
~ You don't need to spend a fortune on makeup brushes. ELF brushes will do (apprx. $2 - $7 per brush), and Real Technique brushes are quite good (apprx. $5 - $12 per brush).
~ Curl your eyelashes.
~ Always put at least a tiny bit of color on your lips.
~ Use mascara.
~ Do your brows. Take the time. Learn to do it well. It's worth it. (Unless you are blessed with thick, luscious, non-patchy brows, in which case I hate you).
~ If you wear under-eye concealer, set it with a setting powder.
What's okay to buy at the drugstore, what should I invest more money in?
INVEST: Lipstick - Imo a higher end (matte or long-wearing cream) lipstick is more pigmented and lasts longer on the lip.
INVEST: Eye liner - Imo a higher end eye liner is easier to apply and stays put far better.
INVEST: Brow filler - The Anastasia Brow Wiz really The Best, but it will cost you.
~ Setting powder is worth spending more for if you've noticed that your under-eye concealer creases and you just want to use it to set that area. OR if you have really oily skin. If you don't have oily skin, but you use a dewy foundation and feel you need to set your whole face, trying cheaper setting products is worth it. (Try to hunt down RCMA loose setting powder; I haven't tried it yet myself, but it's fairly cheap and it's a cult favorite among people in the know.)
~ Foundation is worth spending more for if you have problem skin and need FULL coverage (which it sounds like you don't).
What are the nice makeup brands and are they worth it?
I'm not sure whether any pricey makeup is really, truly worth it, but if you're wondering whether a particular brand is worth at least looking into, here's my opinion:
Make Up For Ever - YES (especially for foundation and lipstick)
Anastasia Beverly Hills - Yes (esp. for brow products)
Nars - Yes (esp. for concealer and lipstick)
Urban Decay - Yes (esp. for lipstick, eyeshadows, and eye primer)
Benefit - Yes (esp. for brow products and Hoola bronzer)
Sephora Brand - Yes (ask for samples, try everything, be skeptical, but consider this line)
Tarte - Probably (If you can find Shape Tape Concealer, try iiiiit)
Mac - Probably? (So. Many. Lipsticks)
Bare Minerals - Probably? I really don't know.
Too Faced, Kat Von D, Becca, Hourglass - Maybe?
Estee Lauder, Dior, Guerlain, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, Chanel - Lol, nope!
NYX has a HUGE selection, and seems to be trying to bridge the gap between drugstore and department store makeup. I have no idea how well they're succeeding, but they seem to be making a lot of money, so.
Physicians Formula seems to do well with powder products that go on the face (i.e. blush, bronzer, highlighter, powder foundation).
ELF has a pretty huge line (including brushes), and is very cheap. (In Canada it's hard to find stores that carry more than a little bit of ELF merch, so I haven't tried a lot of ELF products.)
What should one do at minimum if they want to wear light makeup but still look nice?
~If you have nice skin, then skipping foundation is fine.
~Apply concealer under the eyes (can use fingers if desired) and on any blemishes (always use a tiny brush).
~Set the concealer with a setting powder (using a small powder brush).
~Fill in brows with brow product of choice and gently brush them smooth with a spoolie.
~Apply blush (using a blush brush).
~Apply mascara.
~Apply lip product of choice, using at least a tinted balm.
Once you're used to this routine, it probably only takes about 5 minutes. The brows can take ages though if you're a perfectionist, so that step really depends on exactly how "on fleek" you want your brows to be.
If you have large mobile lids, then I guess your eye might look a bit naked without some liner and/or shadow. I have deep set eyes and small mobile lids, so I tend to skip these steps. However, I will say that liner looks hella good on a lot of people. So if you like how it looks on you, then I'm sure it's worth doing.
