Cosmetologist here, and there's really not much of a difference in drugstore and department store makeup. Buy what you like and what works best for you. And look for makeup tutorials on YouTube and Instagram. My own routine is moisturizer, undereye concealer, blush or bronzer, mascara, lip gloss or tinted balm. Sometimes I add eyeshadow. I have eyeshadow palettes by ELF (drugstore brand) and Urban Decay (department store brand), and I have no preference either way.

That's interesting! And really good to know. Do you have any tips as a cosmetologist in regards to applying makeup?

Yes, and I should've said this before, good tools/brushes are most definitely worth the money, as they last for years with proper care. I'm in agreement with another poster that eyebrows can make a look (I'm not a fan of the super overdone brow that's big now though), and I'm a fan of "less is more". I also like to play up one feature at a time: eyes, lips, skin, cheeks. Say dewey skin with a wash of sheer gold eyeshadow, a flick of black mascara, and a touch of color on lips/cheeks. Or a classic ~smokey eye~ look, with minimal color elsewhere. A bold lip looks great with just a touch of eyeliner and mascara, and I'm really digging the unconventional lip colors now (dark greens, black, navy blue metallic). If you like glam looks, add contour and highlighter (again, lots of great tutorials out there). Makeup should be fun, it should be a way for you to express yourself!

Do you have any tips for good lip glosses/post lipsticks where the color still stays on? My experience with drugstore stuff is that either the stuff on my lips is gone within an hour, or it is the matte stuff that makes my dry lips look awful and feels really uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, unless it's labeled "long wearing", it's just going to come off, but Maybelline and Rimmel both make long-wearing lipsticks that hold up well. For dry lips, you can make a sugar scrub with a little olive oil and brown sugar, the sugar gently exfoliates and the oil hydrates. Apply before bedtime with a finger tip, in a gentle circling motion, then rinse off and apply a good lip balm.
