Personally, I hate when people hear/read love and only think romantic.

Also, gen fics CAN HAVE PAIRINGS. THEY'RE JUST NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THE FOCUS.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this. Plus if the focus was two friends, the Doctor and Clara hashing out an issue between them, that is more than in the spirit of the fest.

Where was this fest anyway?

That's not a universal definition of "gen" though. When I was first on the internet, "no romance/pairings at all" was how gen was described to me.

Common usage now tends to be "fics where the focus is on something that's not a romantic or sexual relationship."

There's also a third definition of gen that I've heard, which defines gen as being "like an episode of the show." Which is an interesting guideline for the inclusion or exclusion of background romance, but only covers a small segment of gen. There are a lot of genres, such as hurt/comfort, slice of life, and future fics, that don't actually look like an episode of the show.

What it sounds like to me is that the mod was using definition 1 and the OP was using definition 2, and both of them were assuming that they agreed on a definition.

The only gen fic exchange I'm familiar with (Supernatural Summer Gen) has the definition of "gen" that they are using in the info page, which prevents this kind of confusion.

I've always gone with something like the third definition of gen kinda. The story had to not focus on any romance or pairings at all, and the only ships that could be mentioned in the background were canon ones. So if there were a gen NCIS fic set in the season where Tony was dating Jeanne, then it would focus on the case but could mention Tony/Jeanne. That way it was at a level of the show and no one could go in there expecting a gen fic and be surprised by, say, Tony/Ziva or Tony/Gibbs mentions. As some people have "anti" pairs and wouldn't want to see a mention of them in a fic they were expecting to be gen.

This seems like ridiculous hairsplitting.

If this wasn't an exchange, I'd just yank the fic from the "fest" and post it independently.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds dumb and I'm sorry you had to deal with that, OP, but I'd love to read your fic.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Just a thought,OP, but couldn't you rephrase as "complicated" and leave it to the reader to interpret what exactly that means. Throw a few searching glances and downcast eyes, maybe a reference to childhood adventures to really muddy the waters.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This could go either way for me. I've read fics where it's Character A and Character C talking about A's feelings for Character B, and while the primary interaction is between A and C, the primary focus is on A's feelings for B. Makes the fic distinctly shippy in nature.

The way you're describing the situation makes the exchange mods seem petty and unfair, but I'd have to actually read your fic to know what the real situation is. If the primary focus truly is on the friendship between Clara and Twelve, then the mods are being unreasonable. But if the primary focus is on Clara and Twelve establishing the non-platonic feelings between Twelve and Missy, then I can understand where the mods are coming from.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I have to agree with this. It depends on how your fic approaches the relationship between Twelve and Missy. If that's the focus of his and Clara's discussion with a clearly romantic lean between Twelve and Missy I could understand the request, but haven't not read the fic I don't know.

I do run a femslash exchange and once had a person turn in a fic where Character A (female) was talking with Character B (also female) about Character's B's feelings for Character C (male and character A's brother)...at the end Character A had convinced Character B that dating her brother was a thing that should happen, then the two girls shared a parting kiss. I asked for a rewrite that was femslash focused.

Wtf.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's Doctor Who fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-29 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's WTF even for Who fandom, honestly.

Wow, fuck those mods, honestly.

I agree completely with the first commenter. Not all love is romantic, and even if that were your intention with that line a) It's being made almost as an accusation by Clara rather than a confession of love from The Doctor, it sounds like and b) Like the first commenter said, gen fic can feature romantic pairings and still be gen.

I'm sorry you got fucked over like that, OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I want to be sympathetic because I know mods can be cray.

But if they won't let you edit it, it really does sound like your fic is Clara playing relationship guru to the Doctor and the real focus is on the Doctor's feelings for Missy.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-30 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
I understand maintaining the rules of an exchange fest, but in terms of reader's greed, I don't care one way or the other. I'll read your fic, OP, whether it's the right gen or the wrong gen, because that premise is right up my alley.

I do hope the mess gets resolved with no hard feelings and that your recipient gets something to their liking. But I also really hope you post your fic for the rest of us to read.

A+ Python reference there, nonny.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-31 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'd tell those assclowns to go fuck themselves with that bullshit.
